Every one of them sells estimated demand, and your money turns on conversion inside your own account. So run seven checks on any candidate before you pay, and buy the one that clears all seven, since the subscription is the smallest decision. ## The short version - **The checks decide, not the brand on the invoice.** Seven of them run in order, and most candidates stop at the first. - **Test any candidate on a product you already sell.** You know the truth on that listing, so you can see where the estimate is wrong. - **Coverage decides the second year.** Amazon runs 23 marketplaces, and we build content in English, German, Spanish, and French. - **A subscription with no named reader produces nothing.** Write the name down before you enter a card. - **The stop rule goes in writing before the first invoice.** A product gets 60 to 90 days here against the kill criteria, and software earns no more patience. ## What buying software at two aggregators taught me I ran data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two large Amazon aggregators, and audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands at $5M to $10M each. The brands that grew past seven figures had full visibility across sourcing, creative, and growth, and they used data to guide every decision. The ones that stalled were guessing. From that seat, buying software looked exactly like buying an agency. Both are vendor decisions, and both fail in the same quiet way. The line item is easy to approve, and the decision it was meant to change goes unnamed. So I stopped asking which product was best and started asking what would change on the Monday after we signed. Most candidates died before anyone opened a pricing page. Today 50 operators here run about 70 Amazon brands by hand across all 23 marketplaces. We still buy software, and we still run these seven checks on every candidate. ## Seven checks to run before you pay for a keyword tool Sellers arrive at this question carrying one sentence: _"I'm spending money on ads but don't know if it's working."_ A keyword tool does not answer that sentence. The checks below decide whether one would help. Run them in order. A candidate that fails a check does not advance, and price never breaks a tie. 1. **Name the decision it changes.** Write one sentence on what you will do differently in the week after you subscribe. Done properly, that sentence carries a decision, an owner, and a date. 2. **Test it on a product you already sell.** Ask it to rank the terms for a listing whose numbers you know by heart. Done properly, you judge that ranking against what your own account reports, never against a demo catalog. 3. **Check the markets you sell in next.** Keyword lists do not survive translation, and a term set carried from English into German sells nothing. Done properly, the tool builds a fresh list inside each of the 23 marketplaces you plan to enter. 4. **Ask what leaves with you.** Export the term lists, the groupings, and the history during the trial, not after the argument. Done properly, everything you built stays portable on the day you cancel. 5. **Price it against your ad budget, not your revenue.** We set no hard minimum on media and recommend about $1,000 a month for meaningful optimization. Done properly, the subscription is a small fraction of that number. 6. **Write the stop rule before the first invoice.** We give a product 60 to 90 days against the kill criteria, then stop with no emotion. Done properly, the subscription carries the same written window and the same named owner. 7. **Name the person who reads it every week.** A tool with no reader is a cost with no output. Done properly, that name sits in the weekly update beside what the reading changed. Check 1 removed most of the candidates I ever evaluated as a buyer. ## The questions no keyword tool answers for you The tools define the strategy instead of the other way around, and keyword software is where that starts. A term list is easy to produce, so the plan becomes a term list. We scored 193,753 niches at the 2026-08-26 capture, and 4.8% of them passed. That verdict rests on 90+ data points per decision, and estimated demand is one of them. | The question | What a keyword tool reports | What actually settles it |
| --- | --- | --- | | Is this market worth entering | estimated demand today | market size, growth trajectory, and return rate across 90+ data points | | Will this term sell at my price | a ranking built without your listing | conversion in your own account | | When do I stop paying for it | nothing at all | a written window, 60 to 90 days on a product here | Flapen figures as of September 2026. Read the last row twice. No subscription has ever told a seller to cancel it. ## What a ranked tool list will not tell you A ranked list cannot run your checks. It was written without a number from your account, and four things go unsaid. 1. **It cannot run check 2 for you.** The ranking was built on someone else's catalog, at someone else's price. Done properly, you rank the finalists yourself on a listing you already sell. 2. **It will not tell you which subscription to cancel.** Renewals are automatic and cancellation has no owner, so stacks grow without a decision. Done properly, one person owns the cancel list and reviews it on a written date. 3. **It will not price the tool against your media.** A subscription that eats a third of a $1,000 monthly ad budget has to beat the auction. Done properly, the ad budget is funded first. 4. **It will not tell you to buy nothing.** Sometimes the honest answer is one free export and an hour of your attention. Done properly, the checklist is allowed to end in no purchase. Run the same seven on us. Our fee is flat, from $800 a month for one product to $2,400 for five, with every service included and no commission. The contract runs month to month on 30 days' notice, and on exit you keep the account, the campaigns, the creative, and a written handover. If the checks say run this yourself, on one subscription and no agency, do that. ## Related answers - [Amazon PPC software](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-ppc-software) - [Amazon seller research tools](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-seller-research-tools) - [Amazon crisis management and who handles it better](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-crisis-management-who-handles-it-better) - [Best Amazon keyword research solutions](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-keyword-research-solutions) - [Build vs buy for your Amazon channel: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/build-vs-buy) One free thing to do this week, for the seller running one to three products at $5K to $30K a month. The one that clears all seven checks against a product you already sell. At one to three products, check 5 usually settles it, because a subscription competing with a $1,000 monthly ad budget rarely wins. Buy the answer in the auction first. Can I do keyword research without paying for a tool? Yes, for the decisions that matter most. Your own account reports which terms convert at your price, and that beats any external estimate on the products you sell today. A paid database earns its place on the products you have not launched.Who should pay for the keyword tools, me or my agency? Ask before you sign, and get the answer in writing. At Flapen every service sits inside the flat monthly fee, from $800 a month for one product to $2,400 for five, with no onboarding fee. A provider that rebills its software has made its own stack your line item. What does a keyword tool see that my own account cannot? It sees demand outside your catalog. Terms you do not rank on, and products you have not launched, are the one thing your own reports cannot show you. That is the only job worth ranking any tool on.![The Flapen Weekly Product Research report, an Amazon niche shortlist scored 0–100 with its score radar on the cover](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fhomepage%2Famazon-product-research-report-dark.webp&w=640&q=100) The weekly niche report ## Product research, in your inbox Every niche that cleared the bar this week: what it sells for, what it costs to enter, and why it passed.
