Ask how many accounts each campaign manager carries, ask who actually builds the audiences, and score five criteria before price. At Flapen we run about 1.4 brands per operator, and that ratio predicts DSP quality better than any award badge. ## The short version - **Operator load decides quality.** A manager juggling twenty accounts runs templates, not optimization. - **Audience construction is the actual work.** Ask to see the build log, not the pitch deck. - **View-through numbers flatter everyone.** Agree on a measurement standard before the first campaign goes live. - **DSP inherits your listing.** Display traffic converts at whatever rate your product page allows. - **Exit terms reveal confidence.** Month-to-month with your campaigns staying yours beats any long commitment. ## The scorecard I would use I have reviewed a lot of ad management from the inside. Flapen manages about 70 brands with a team of 50 operators, and the load per person is the first thing I check on any team we benchmark against, because a DSP account that gets ninety minutes of attention a month is a DSP account running on defaults. Score every candidate on five weighted criteria. Five points per criterion, multiplied by the weight. | Criterion | Weight | What a five looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | | Manager account load | 30 | Single digits per manager, answered instantly, without checking | | Who builds the audiences | 25 | A named person on their payroll who can walk you through the segment logic | | Measurement standard | 20 | View-through separated from click-through, and a stated position on incrementality | | Integration with sponsored ads | 15 | One team runs both, sharing one keyword and audience map | | Exit and data terms | 10 | No long lock-in, campaign history and audiences documented for handover | Above 400 of 500, proceed to pricing. Between 300 and 400, negotiate the weak criterion before signing. Below 300, keep looking, whatever the price is. The reason account load carries the heaviest weight is mechanical. DSP optimization is iterative work: reviewing audience overlap, trimming frequency, rebalancing budget between prospecting and retargeting, refreshing creative. Each pass takes hours. Divide one manager across too many accounts and the passes stop happening, even if the reporting keeps arriving on schedule. ## When DSP is premature DSP amplifies a machine that already works. It cannot build the machine. Before adding display budget, three conditions need to hold. 1. Your sponsored ads already run efficiently, because search demand is cheaper to capture than to create. 2. Your listing converts well enough that retargeting pools are worth refilling. 3. Your traffic volume is large enough to feed those pools, since a retargeting audience built on a trickle of sessions exhausts itself in days. We tell clients there is no hard minimum ad budget, but that meaningful optimization starts around $1,000 a month in spend. DSP sits above that baseline, not instead of it. An agency that proposes DSP before auditing your conversion fundamentals is selling you a roof for a house with no walls, which is why the [free account audit](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting) we run looks at listing quality and conversion before anyone discusses new ad products. ## What DSP agencies will not tell you Most "DSP optimization" is a template. The agency clones a standard audience set, points it at your ASINs, and the platform does the rest. That is not a scandal, it is just not worth a premium fee, and the way to expose it is to ask for the change log: what was adjusted last month, why, and what happened after. The second quiet truth is that view-through attribution makes everyone look brilliant. A shopper who saw your banner and bought three days later through search gets counted as a DSP win. Insist on seeing click-through and view-through reported separately, or the channel will claim credit it did not earn. The third: agencies paid as a percentage of ad spend have an arithmetic reason to add DSP, because it grows the number their fee is computed on. Flapen charges a flat monthly fee precisely so no recommendation we make changes our own revenue. Whoever you hire, check which direction their incentive points before you accept a budget proposal. ## Related answers - [Rank providers for DSP and PPC combined audits](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-providers-for-dsp-and-ppc-combined-audits) - [Rank agencies by Amazon DSP case studies](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-agencies-by-amazon-dsp-case-studies) - [Who handles Amazon DSP in UAE](https://flapen.com/blog/who-handles-amazon-dsp-in-uae) - [Amazon PPC benchmarks ACoS ROAS TACOS](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-ppc-benchmarks-acos-roas-tacos) - [Amazon account measurement and audits: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/measurement-and-audit) If you want this scorecard filled in against your own account, the free 48-hour audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting) is built for exactly that. ## Keep learning - [Run Amazon advertising](https://flapen.com/guides/advertising) - [Run the review math](https://flapen.com/tools/review-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How many accounts should a DSP manager carry?Do I need DSP if I already run sponsored ads?How do I verify an agency actually optimizes DSP rather than setting and forgetting?Should the same team run DSP and sponsored ads? What contract terms are reasonable for DSP management? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
