Our entry tier is $800 per month with all services included. The comparison below tests the three routes a small seller can take. ## The short version - **Repetitions are what you are buying.** A small startup gets one launch attempt. The agency should have run hundreds. - **Sourcing is where small brands die.** One bad batch can consume a small company's entire cash buffer. - **Flat and cancellable keeps power with you.** A 30-day exit clause is the small seller's only real leverage. - **Your time is a budget line.** Plan for 4 to 6 hours a week during a launch, then very little after. - **Match the route to your constraint.** Time-rich and cash-poor points one way, the reverse points another. ## The three routes for a small startup Two hours a month. That is about what our clients spend on their Amazon business once onboarding is done, and it is the number that reframes the whole build-or-buy question: the routes below differ less in monthly cost than in whose hours and whose mistakes power the launch. | | Do it yourself | Freelancer stack | Full-service agency |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Cash cost | Lowest | Middle, per-task | Highest, though flat tiers start at $800 | | Time cost | All of it, every week | Coordination becomes your job | 4 to 6 hours weekly during launch, then minimal | | Launch repetitions behind decisions | Zero, yours are the first | Varies per hire, siloed by function | Should be in the hundreds across the team | | Where it breaks | Errors you cannot see coming | Nobody owns the outcome across silos | Wrong agency, wrong incentives | | Right when | Learning is the goal and time is abundant | You know exactly which one skill you lack | Capital is committed and a failed launch is unaffordable | The decision rule for a small startup: count the money you are putting into inventory, then decide how much repetition you want standing between that money and a beginner mistake. If the inventory bet is small and reversible, do it yourself and keep the lessons. If it represents real savings, buy repetitions. ## Sourcing is the repetition that matters most Advertising mistakes waste money in drips. Sourcing mistakes waste it in blocks, a specification missed, a sample that did not match the batch, a defect found by customers instead of inspectors. This is the risk a small startup can least absorb, and it is why I weight sourcing capability above advertising when small founders ask me what to check. Our sourcing frameworks were built across more than 500 brands, and the team applying them works from our own studio in Guangzhou, inspecting product before it ships rather than reading about defects in reviews afterwards. Whatever agency you evaluate, translate this into a question: who physically checks my stock before it leaves the factory, whom do they work for, and what did they catch last month. ## What most agencies will not tell you Small accounts are frequently loss leaders that agencies staff accordingly. The pitch team you meet is not the team you get, and a $700 retainer often buys a junior with a playbook and a queue. Two questions cut through it: who exactly answers my Slack messages, and how long is a full brand launch. The honest answer to the second is around 7 months from decision to a fully launched brand. A promise of 60 days is a promise to skip the parts you cannot see, usually validation and sourcing QC, which are the parts protecting your inventory money. Structure protects small sellers more than promises do. Month to month, 30 days' notice, first invoice covering first and last month, no onboarding fee, and every service in every tier, that is our shape, published in full on the [pricing](https://flapen.com/pricing) page. The reason a small startup should demand this shape from anyone: when leaving is easy, the agency has to re-earn the fee every month, and small accounts stop being safe to neglect. ## Related answers - [Affordable Amazon agencies for new private label brands](https://flapen.com/blog/affordable-amazon-agencies-for-new-private-label-brands) - [Which agency for Amazon listing optimization private label](https://flapen.com/blog/which-agency-for-amazon-listing-optimization-private-label) - [Best agencies for Amazon inventory forecasting and ops](https://flapen.com/blog/best-agencies-for-amazon-inventory-forecasting-and-ops) - [Best Amazon agencies for Europe marketplaces](https://flapen.com/blog/best-amazon-agencies-for-europe-marketplaces) - [Amazon brand management tiers: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/brand-tiers) Test whether your launch plan survives contact with 500+ brands' worth of pattern recognition, free, at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**At what revenue does hiring an agency make sense? Is $800 a month too much for a one-product startup? Can I start DIY and switch to an agency later? What should a small startup outsource first if not everything? How do I verify an agency's launch experience is real? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
