Ask who does the work, how many accounts they hold, and what they would stop in month one.","For a small brand, the best account manager is the one who will actually run more than one traffic channel and can name the brands they already carry. Ask who does the work, how many accounts they hold, and what they would stop doing in month one before you compare any fees.

## The short version

- **Small accounts fail from neglect, not incompetence.** The risk is being the smallest client in a portfolio, not being sold bad advice.
- **Most accounts run on two traffic sources.** There are five available, and the gap between two and four is where small brands find growth.
- **Judge the person, not the logo.** You are hiring one operator's attention, whatever the website says.
- **Cheap and quiet is worse than expensive and honest.** A dormant account still costs you inventory carrying and rank decay.
- **A short notice period is your real protection.** Ours is 30 days, month to month, with no lock-in.

## The mistake that costs small brands the most

The common error is buying the cheapest available management and then measuring it by whether anything went wrong. Nothing goes wrong. That is the problem. Listings stay live, campaigns keep running, invoices keep arriving, and eleven months later the account looks almost exactly as it did at the start, minus the fees. Neglect is invisible on a dashboard because it produces no incident.

What it costs is compounding. A rating that drifts down for a year takes longer to lift than it took to fall. Inventory ordered against flat forecasts ties up cash. Competitors who improved their images while yours sat still now convert better at the same price. None of that shows up as a failure event, and none of it is recoverable for free.

## Failure modes, ranked by what they cost you

| Rank | Failure mode | What it costs | Early warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Account neglect | A year of compounding rank and rating decay | Reports that repeat last month's language |
| 2 | Single-channel dependence | Growth stops when advertising costs rise | Every plan is a bid change |
| 3 | No named owner | Nobody notices problems between meetings | You email an inbox, not a person |
| 4 | Creative never refreshed | Falling conversion at unchanged price | The main image is over a year old |
| 5 | Advice that never says stop | Money poured into products that cannot recover | No product has ever been recommended for discontinuation |

### Single-channel dependence deserves its own paragraph

There are five ways to put traffic on an Amazon listing: organic search, paid advertising, promotions and deals, influencer and creator content, and off-channel sources such as email, social, and external landing pages. Most sellers run two, usually organic and paid, and then wonder why growth stops when advertising gets more expensive. For a small brand this matters more than it does for a large one, because you cannot outspend anybody. You have to be present where the spending is lighter.

So when you interview an account manager, ask which of the five they will actually run for you, in which month, and what the first creator or off-channel test would look like. A manager who answers only in campaign terms is offering you one channel with two names.

## What to ask a candidate before you sign

1. **Who specifically works on my account, and how many other brands do they carry?** You want a name and a number.
2. **What would you stop doing in the first month?** Good operators have subtractions, not just additions.
3. **Which traffic channels will be live by day 90?** Then check it at day 90.
4. **What does your reporting look like in a bad month?** Ask for a real example, not a template.
5. **How do I leave, and what do I keep?** With us, 30 days of notice and you keep the account, campaigns, creative, and a written handover.

## What most agencies will not tell you

Small accounts are frequently a loss leader. They are taken on cheaply, staffed thinly, and kept as long as they are quiet, because the operator's attention naturally follows the largest fee in their portfolio. Nobody says this out loud, and there is no dishonesty in it, just economics. Your defense is to ask about workload, get a name, and use a short notice period rather than to hunt for the lowest fee.

The second thing worth knowing is that some small brands should not hire anyone yet. If your issue is that a product has no demand, a manager will not create demand, and paying monthly to have that confirmed slowly is a poor use of money. A free written audit will tell you which situation you are in, and ours takes 48 hours.

## Related answers

- [Who to hire to run my Amazon FBA brand](/blog/who-to-hire-to-run-my-amazon-fba-brand)
- [How to choose an Amazon account manager](/blog/how-to-choose-an-amazon-account-manager)
- [Affordable alternatives to hiring a full-time Amazon manager](/blog/alternatives-to-hiring-a-full-time-amazon-manager)
- [Amazon agency red flags to watch out for](/blog/amazon-agency-red-flags-to-watch-out-for)
- [Build vs buy for your Amazon channel: the complete guide](/blog/build-vs-buy)

The free 48-hour audit is the cheapest way to find out whether you need a manager at all, and it lives at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16,17],"amazon-fba","ppc","organic-ranking","off-channel","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/build-vs-buy-06.jpg","2026-09-04T04:40:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35
"best-amazon-account-managers-for-small-brands-faq-1","Ours is $800 a month for one product, with the full service set included, no commission and no revenue share.
