Advertising buys the traffic, the data, and the early rank a new product cannot earn on its own. Organic keeps that traffic at a much lower cost once it is earned. On a mature product, the arithmetic usually favors defending organic position first. ## The short version - **Paid is rented, organic is owned.** Stop paying and paid traffic ends the same day. - **Organic rank is bought with sales velocity.** Advertising is the most reliable way to buy that velocity early. - **Run the margin arithmetic before choosing.** Cost per acquired unit against contribution margin decides this, not preference. - **A new product cannot start with organic.** There is no history for the algorithm to rank. - **A mature product that leans on paid is fragile.** Rising click costs go straight through to profit. ## The arithmetic, not the argument This question gets debated as strategy when it is really a cost per unit calculation. Take a hypothetical product selling at $30 with a contribution margin of $9 after landed cost, Amazon's fees, and returns. That $9 is your entire budget for acquiring one more customer. If paid clicks cost $1.20 and one visit in ten becomes an order, each unit costs $12 to acquire. You are paying $12 to earn $9, and volume makes the hole deeper rather than shallower. Move conversion to one in six and the same clicks cost $7.20 per unit, which is thin but survivable. Halve the click cost through better targeting and it becomes profitable. Organic traffic on the same listing costs nothing per click. It is not free, because earning the position took work and usually took paid traffic to start, but the marginal visit is free forever afterwards. That asymmetry is the entire case for prioritizing the organic side once a product has any history at all. ## What each channel actually costs you | | Paid advertising | Organic position |
| --- | --- | --- | | Cost per visit | Rises with competition, paid every time | Zero at the margin | | Time to first effect | Hours | Weeks | | What happens if you stop | Traffic ends immediately | Decays slowly over weeks | | What it compounds into | Data and sales velocity | Rank, which produces more rank | | Where it fails | Thin margins and expensive categories | Products with no sales history | | The hidden cost | Click prices you do not control | Time, and the work of keeping relevance current | ## Where the money should go, by stage**Before launch, spend on the page.** Search relevance, imagery, price position, and the review path are decided here, and every dollar of traffic you buy later is multiplied by how well this was done. Buying visits to an unfinished page is the most common way sellers waste a launch budget.**At launch, paid does the heavy lifting.** A new product has no history, so advertising is how you buy the first sales, the search term data, and the velocity that starts moving organic position. Expect this period to be deliberately unprofitable, and give it a defined window with a number attached rather than an open-ended budget.**At maturity, defend organic and prune paid.** Once real organic position exists, the job shifts to protecting it and cutting the paid spend that is now buying customers who would have found you anyway. This is the step most accounts skip, and it is where a large share of quiet losses live. ## What most agencies will not tell you The two are not actually separate disciplines, and treating them as separate services is how brands end up paying twice for one job. Advertising data is the best keyword research available for organic work, because it tells you which terms converted rather than which terms have volume. An agency that runs the ad account without feeding that back into the listing is throwing away the most valuable output of your own spend. The second thing, and it is the benchmark I would hold anyone to including us: ask what proportion of the brands they take on become profitable within the first year. The majority of ours do. That single question cuts through the SEO against PPC debate entirely, because profitability is what both channels exist to produce, and any agency that cannot answer it has never measured itself on the outcome you actually care about. ## Related answers - [Amazon PPC and SEO agency recommendations](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-ppc-and-seo-agency-recommendations) - [PPC and DSP management for Amazon brands](https://flapen.com/blog/ppc-and-dsp-management-for-amazon-brands) - [Amazon PPC management service comparison](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-ppc-management-service-comparison) - [How to fix low Amazon conversion rate](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-fix-low-amazon-conversion-rate) - [Done-for-you Amazon management: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/done-for-you-management) We will run that cost per unit arithmetic on your catalog before you commit to anything, at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Can I rank organically without running ads at all?How much of my sales should be organic?Does better copy reduce advertising cost?Which should a small budget go to first? How long before organic work shows up in sales? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
