![Flapen cover for Amazon Marketing Experts and the One Question That Tests Them: a client watching the Flapen photographer frame a product in the studio](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fblog%2Fclusters%2Fhiring-an-agency-05.jpg&w=1536&q=100) Nobody can read expertise off a website, so test it with one question. Ask what would make a candidate tell you to stop spending on a product. An operator answers with four signals, being rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and cost of customer acquisition trajectory, read across a window agreed in writing beforehand. ## The short version - **A claim of expertise is untestable until it carries a stop rule.** Anyone can list the channels they have run, and almost nobody lists the products they told a client to end. - **Four signals make the call to scale, fix, or kill.** Rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and cost of customer acquisition trajectory, read across 60 to 90 days. - **The window goes in writing before the work starts.** A window set after the numbers arrive is a negotiation rather than a criterion. - **The retainer is rarely the expensive part of a wrong hire.** A quarter spent holding a product the signals had already condemned costs more than any monthly fee. - **Rejection is what depth looks like from outside.** We scored 193,753 niches at the 2026-08-26 capture, and 4.8% of them passed. ## Five ways assumed expertise costs money Every failure below starts the same way. Somebody bought a description of expertise instead of testing it, and the account paid the difference across the following quarter. | Failure | What it costs | Early signal |
| --- | --- | --- | | The market was entered on a snapshot of today | The whole launch budget, because no campaign repairs a market nobody sized | A monthly fee was quoted before any market analysis existed | | Nobody wrote down what would end the spend | A 60 to 90 day window spent on a product the four signals had already condemned | Each monthly plan repeats last month's initiatives in fresh words | | A bigger budget arrived in place of a diagnosis | Advertising money aimed at a listing, pricing, or return rate problem it cannot reach | The recommendation lands before anyone has read your return rate | | Depth was assumed from a client list | The diagnosis you paid for, because the work runs off a template instead of your account | Nobody can name what they analyze besides review count and volume | | The person who pitched is not the person who works | Attention in a queue, so a bad trend surfaces a reporting cycle late | No one will put in writing who touches the account and where they sit | Flapen figures as of September 2026. Read the middle column before the left one. Every row costs more than the fee that produced it, which is why a cheap wrong hire is still an expensive quarter. ## The question that makes expertise testable A seller running one to three products at $5K to $30K a month puts it to me plainly. _"I don't have the profitability I expected."_ Underneath that sentence there is almost always one product nobody has been willing to stop. Every live product faces one of three calls: scale it, fix it, or kill it. Four signals decide it, being rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and cost of customer acquisition trajectory. Scale when they trend the right way, fix when one is off and addressable, kill when none of them improve inside the window. Fix is the call that carries the work. Diagnose before another dollar goes out, across listing quality, primary image click-through rate, conversion rate, ad performance, traffic channel activation, pricing, and return rate. Then read the four signals again in a fresh window. I learned this the expensive way. I poured money into a failing product for three months hoping the ads would turn around. They did not, and the kill criteria came out of that quarter. Depth is what makes the call reliable rather than brave. Ninety or more data points sit behind a launch decision here, 50 operators run about 70 brands by hand, and the majority of those brands reach profitability inside their first year. ## Test the claim before the invoice starts Ask every candidate for a written audit and compare what comes back. Ours is a written report with prioritized fixes inside 48 hours at no charge, and a real one names at least one number about your account you could not have found in five minutes. Then read the terms instead of the credentials. We work month to month on 30 days' notice with no minimum term, and on exit you keep the Seller Central account, the campaigns, the creative, and a written handover. Pricing is flat, $800 a month for one product up to $2,400 for five, with every service included and no commission on spend. ## What people selling expertise will not tell you Three things go unsaid in almost every pitch, and on a bad day that includes mine. | What goes unsaid | What it costs you | The early signal |
| --- | --- | --- | | The fee is identical whether your product lives or dies | A window of spend nobody across the table has a reason to end | No one on the account has ever advised you to stop anything | | Most of your first year was decided before the first advertisement ran | Market choice and the primary image set a ceiling that advertising only runs toward | Every proposal you receive is an advertising proposal | | A provider who has never refused a seller has one filter | A plan built for somebody else's market, sold to you as a method | You ask what they turned down last quarter and hear an answer with no numbers | Flapen figures as of September 2026. Hold me to the same three rows. Ask what would make me tell you to stop, who touches your account, and what leaving costs. If those answers do not satisfy you inside one call, do not hire us. ## Related answers - [Amazon agency](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-agency) - [Amazon agency UK](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-agency-uk) - [Amazon agency experience in new product launches](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-agency-experience-in-new-product-launches) - [Best agencies to manage Amazon PPC for new sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/best-agencies-to-manage-amazon-ppc-for-new-sellers) - [Hiring an Amazon agency: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/hiring-an-agency) One free thing to do this week, for the seller running one to three products at $5K to $30K a month. Then write your own stop rule in one sentence, naming the four signals and the window, before you ask anybody else for theirs. A written stop rule, a diagnosis that comes before any budget increase, and a record of work refused. Ask for all three in one call and listen for numbers. Certificates, badges, and client logos are the cheapest part of the claim to assemble.Should I hire anyone at all, or run the marketing myself? If you run one to three products at $5K to $30K a month, both are honest options. Buying help makes sense when the constraint is hours or a skill you do not hold, and not when the constraint is a market nobody has sized. Get a free audit first and let the report decide it.What should this cost me every month? Ours is flat, $800 a month for one product and $2,400 for five, with all 50+ services included and no commission or revenue share below $50,000 a month in profit. Read any quote against the capital sitting behind it. A single product launch takes $8,000 to $15,000 before a fee is counted. How long before I know the hire was right? Onboarding runs an audit, then a brand manager, then the blockers, then execution, and a measurable ACoS improvement typically shows inside 30 days. The larger call is the 60 to 90 day window against the four signals. Expect a written update every week and a live review every second week in between.![The Flapen Weekly Product Research report, an Amazon niche shortlist scored 0–100 with its score radar on the cover](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fhomepage%2Famazon-product-research-report-dark.webp&w=640&q=100) The weekly niche report ## Product research, in your inbox Every niche that cleared the bar this week.
