![Flapen cover for Amazon DSP vs Sponsored Display which to choose: the same product staged on three sweeps for three markets](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fblog%2Fclusters%2Fgeography-and-marketplaces-05.jpg&w=1536&q=100) Start with Sponsored Display. It is self-serve, cheap to test, and lives beside your other sponsored campaigns. Move to DSP when you have a converting listing, an audience worth retargeting at scale, and budget that clears its commitments. Choosing DSP first is the most expensive sequencing mistake in Amazon advertising. ## The short version - **Sponsored Display is the default.** Self-serve, low commitment, quick to test, quick to switch off. - **DSP is infrastructure.** Programmatic reach on and off Amazon, worth the overhead once audience size and budget justify it. - **Sequence beats selection.** Most wasted DSP budget was committed before the listing deserved the traffic. - **Judge each against your product's stage.** One blended efficiency number will either kill a fair test or excuse real waste. - **Geography changes the math.** Audience depth and impression costs differ by marketplace, so a plan copied from amazon.com rarely survives contact with amazon.de. ## How the two products actually differ The confusion exists because both put display placements in front of shoppers. Underneath, they are different machines. Sponsored Display is a campaign type inside the same console as Sponsored Products: audience and product targeting, retargeting, budgets you can change in a minute, and no gatekeeper between you and the off switch. Amazon DSP is a programmatic media-buying platform. It purchases display and video inventory on Amazon and on third-party exchanges, is priced on impressions, and is normally reached through Amazon's managed service or an agency's seat, with commitments that assume serious budget. | Dimension | Sponsored Display | Amazon DSP |
| --- | --- | --- | | Access | Self-serve in the ad console | Managed service or agency seat | | Pricing | Mostly per click | Per thousand impressions | | Budget flexibility | Change it today | Commitments and planning cycles | | Reach | On Amazon, with some off-Amazon placements | On and off Amazon, plus video | | Right first use | Retargeting and category audiences on a proven listing | Scaling proven audiences beyond what self-serve reaches | One is a campaign type. The other is a media operation. That asymmetry is why the order you adopt them in matters more than which logo looks better in a deck. ## The failure modes, ranked by cost 1. **DSP before the listing converts.** The most expensive mistake on this list. Display retargeting multiplies whatever the listing already does. If the listing converts poorly, you are paying premium impressions to re-show shoppers a page that already failed them once. 2. **Buying reach the console already sells.** Paying DSP overhead and management fees for retargeting audiences that Sponsored Display reaches self-serve. Run the cheap version first and let its results argue for the upgrade. 3. **One efficiency target for every stage.** At Flapen the ACoS target moves with the product's stage, aggressive at launch and efficient at maturity. Judge a DSP test on a maturity target and you will kill it in week two. Judge mature spend on a launch target and you will subsidize waste for a year. 4. **No incrementality question.** Retargeting takes credit for buyers who were coming back anyway. Before committing budget, ask the operator how they will show that the impressions changed the outcome rather than witnessed it. 5. **Copying one marketplace's plan to another.** Audience pools, competition, and impression pricing differ across the 23 Amazon marketplaces. A DSP plan built for the US often overweights budget in a smaller European or Gulf marketplace where sponsored placements alone can saturate demand. ## What most agencies will not tell you about DSP There is an incentive problem built into most DSP pitches. The platform consumes budget by design, it is priced on impressions, and many of the teams recommending it are paid as a percentage of the spend they manage. A DSP recommendation from a team paid on spend is a quote, not a strategy. It can still be the right call, but it needs to survive the sequencing test above on its own merits. The other omission: for many sellers, the next thousand dollars is better spent outside advertising entirely, on conversion, on inventory depth, or on entering a second marketplace. We size the demand side before recommending any new ad product, with the same discipline we apply in [product and market research](https://flapen.com/research), because the ad platform cannot fix a demand problem. ## Related answers - [Compare Amazon DSP partners in the Middle East](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-amazon-dsp-partners-in-the-middle-east) - [How to fix declining ACoS on Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-fix-declining-acos-on-amazon) - [Amazon SEO vs PPC agency which drives ROI](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-seo-vs-ppc-agency-which-drives-roi) - [Rank Amazon PPC agencies for UK DE FR](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-amazon-ppc-agencies-for-uk-de-fr) - [Amazon marketplaces by geography: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/geography-and-marketplaces) For a sequencing read on your own ad account, the 48-hour written audit from [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting) is free. ## Keep learning - [Expand to new channels](https://flapen.com/guides/channel-expansion) - [Find Amazon warehouse locations](https://flapen.com/tools/warehouse-locations) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Is Amazon DSP worth it for a small brand? Can I run DSP without an agency?Does Sponsored Display reach shoppers off Amazon? What budget justifies moving to DSP?How should DSP performance be judged? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
