Two buying routes sell it, a self-serve format and a demand-side platform. Paid is one of five traffic channels, so count the channels already running on your account before funding either one. ## The short version - **Display is a seat inside one channel of five.** Paid is that channel, and the other four move units for you too. - **Two of those five run on most accounts.** A display budget usually gets approved while the other three have never been switched on. - **The checklist comes before the placement.** Ten questions decide whether reach is the right purchase, and your own numbers answer most. - **A weak detail page costs more with display than without.** Reach sends more shoppers to the same page, so a conversion problem arrives at scale. - **A flight runs to a date, not to a feeling.** Four signals close it, and 60 to 90 days without movement in any of them ends the spending. ## Count the channels before you count the impressions Five channels move units on Amazon, and display buys a seat inside one of them. Organic ranking, paid placements, promotions, creator programs, and off-channel traffic make the full set. Most sellers operate two, which means reach gets funded while the other three sit dark. A dollar committed to display is a dollar not spent switching on a channel that has never run. So the first question about a placement is not its price but what the same money does elsewhere. | Channel | The question it answers first | Where the answer lives |
| --- | --- | --- | | Organic ranking | Does the listing hold a first page position | Rank tracking, search term report | | Paid placements | Is search advertising returning at your target | Campaign reports, read per product | | Promotions | Has a discount ever been priced on this product | Promotion history and margin sheet | | Creator programs | Is anyone selling this for a share of revenue | Your creator roster, if one exists | | Off-channel | Does traffic arrive from anywhere but Amazon | Attribution setup and site analytics | Five rows, and most accounts fill two of them. Flapen figures as of September 2026. Fifty operators here run about 70 brands by hand across all 23 Amazon marketplaces. On a new account that column gets filled first, and the empty rows tell us more than the ad reports do. ## The checklist to run before you buy a display placement Work these in order. Each names what done properly looks like, and nine of the ten come from numbers you already own. 1. **Price the unit before the media.** Done properly, you know what one sale keeps after landed cost, fees, and returns. 2. **Check the return rate against 8%.** Done properly, a product above that line goes back to the supplier instead of getting advertised harder. 3. **Read the conversion rate on the detail page.** Done properly, it is measured against the niche and repaired before it receives more shoppers. 4. **Confirm search advertising is already efficient.** Done properly, today's campaigns return at the target you set before reach is added. 5. **Count the traffic channels that are live.** Done properly, all five are listed and every dark one carries a written reason. 6. **Size the audience the placement speaks to.** Done properly, you know how many people viewed the product last month without buying. 7. **Freeze a before picture.** Done properly, last month's orders, organic rank, and branded search sit in one dated file. 8. **Decide how the result gets read.** Done properly, the test design is agreed in writing first, because those rules get renegotiated once numbers arrive. 9. **Check inventory cover for the whole flight.** Done properly, the units exist to serve the demand you buy, so no stockout burns the media. 10. **Put the terms, the owner, and the end date in writing.** Done properly, one named person owns the flight and a calendar date closes it. Only the last item needs another party. The other nine take about an hour with your own reports open. Four signals close a display test, the same four that close every test we run. They are rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and where acquisition cost is heading. Nothing moving across 60 to 90 days stops the spending, with no emotion attached. ## Amazon display ads and the two ways sellers buy them Amazon display ads reach a person rather than a query, and the buying route changes the paperwork instead of the standard. One route sits inside the advertising account you already use. The other is a demand-side platform, whose entry requirements Amazon sets and changes, so ask for today's terms in writing. Neither route alters the ten items above. Both buy reach, both bill before a shopper has formed any intention, and both need item seven. One team should hold display and search together on your account. Two owners produce two reports, and the expensive answer hides in the gap between them. The fee here is flat, $800 a month at one product and $2,400 at five. All 50+ services are included, and no part of the fee is indexed to your media. That makes the display answer cheap for us to get right in either direction. Nothing is subcontracted, so the operator who recommends a flight defends the number afterward. ## Four things a display pitch will not tell you The same checklist, turned around. Each item is what a complete proposal covers without being asked. 1. **The honest answer is often not this quarter.** Done properly, a proposal names what makes display premature on your account, then checks it in front of you. 2. **A report can count an order the advertising did not cause.** Done properly, the result is quoted above a baseline recorded before the first impression. 3. **Nobody in the room is pricing your dark channels.** Done properly, the proposal says what the same budget would produce in a channel you never activated. 4. **Every free review on this market is a sales document, ours included.** Done properly, it names the product, the number, and the fix, and a freelancer could execute it. Our audit covers seven areas in writing and comes back inside 48 hours at no charge. Judge that document rather than the offer attached to it. Hold us to the same ten items. If our answer on your account is a display plan that leaves three of your five channels dark, do not hire us. ## Related answers - [Sponsored display](https://flapen.com/blog/sponsored-display) - [Amazon PPC campaigns](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-ppc-campaigns) - [Marketplace expansion audit for EU and Middle East](https://flapen.com/blog/marketplace-expansion-audit-for-eu-and-middle-east) - [Recommend a reporting stack for Amazon enterprise teams](https://flapen.com/blog/recommend-a-reporting-stack-for-amazon-enterprise-teams) - [Amazon account measurement and audits: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/measurement-and-audit) One free hour this week, and it fits any brand under $50,000 a month in sales. A paid placement that reaches a person rather than a search term. It is bought two ways, a self-serve format and a demand-side platform, and both spend against an audience that asked for nothing. The route matters less than whether your detail page converts the traffic it already gets. How are Amazon display ads different from sponsored search ads? A search ad answers a shopper who has already typed the category into the box. A display ad interrupts somebody who typed nothing, so your creative has to manufacture the intent that search hands you free. When is display too early for my account? When the listing converts below its niche, when returns sit above 8%, or when three of the five traffic channels have never run. Any one of those means cheaper orders sit somewhere else on your account. Repair the page and switch on a dark channel first. Can display help a product that is still in validation? Phase 1 puts 200 units live on $5,000 to $10,000, and that budget exists to buy evidence rather than reach. Validation exits on rating, conversion rate, and cost of customer acquisition, and none of the three arrive faster because more strangers saw the product.![The Flapen Weekly Product Research report, an Amazon niche shortlist scored 0–100 with its score radar on the cover](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fhomepage%2Famazon-product-research-report-dark.webp&w=640&q=100) The weekly niche report ## Product research, in your inbox Every niche that cleared the bar this week.
