But neitheris your main expense. A single-product launch needs $8,000 to $15,000 in total capital, so thereal question is what share of that you spend on help versus on inventory. ## The short version - **Tools: $50 to $150 a month.** Management: from $800. - **Neither is the main cost.** Total launch capital is $8,000 to $15,000. - **Spend on validation before help.** 200 units, $5,000 to $10,000 in Phase 1. - **Buy what you cannot do:** sourcing, quality inspection, photography. - **DIY the thinking.** It is the part you most need to understand yourself. ## Where the money actually goes I run Flapen with 50 operators managing about 70 brands. The most common budgetingerror I see is treating the tool-versus-agency question as the main decision, when it is asmall share of the total. | Line item | Single product | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | | Validation inventory | $2,000 to $6,000 | 200 units, Phase 1 | | Freight and duties | $500 to $2,000 | Varies by size and origin | | Photography and video | $500 to $2,000 | Or your own time and a lightbox | | Samples | $200 to $800 | Multiple suppliers | | Trademark | $300 to $1,500 | Per region | | Initial ad spend | $1,000 to $3,000 | Enough to learn | | Tools or management | $150 to $2,400 over the period | The line everyone debates | | **Total** | **$8,000 to $15,000** | A 5-product brand runs $25,000 to $50,000 | The tools-versus-agency line is typically under 15 percent of the total. Optimizing it whileunder-funding inventory is the wrong trade. ## What tools buy you At $50 to $150 a month, research tools give volume estimates, competitor term extraction, andcategory browsing. That is real value and it is not a strategy. The limitation matters for a beginner specifically. These tools show review count, searchvolume, and a snapshot of today, so the frameworks built around them ask whether a productlooks good rather than whether the market is growing and whether you can capture traffic in itprofitably. A beginner using a tool without a method usually ends up with a filtered list andno way to choose from it. Free alternatives cover more than people expect. Amazon autocomplete shows live demandphrasing. Competitor negative reviews show where the market is asking for something better.Brand Analytics gives search frequency rank once you have Brand Registry. ## What an agency buys you Three things a tool cannot.**Capability you cannot build quickly.** Sourcing and quality inspection in another country, and professional photography and video. Both are hard to do remotely and expensive to getwrong, and the primary image caps all the traffic your listing will ever receive.**A verdict.** A tool gives you data. A good agency tells you the market is too small and youshould not proceed. We use a $2 million per year minimum market size as an entry floor becausebelow that there is not enough revenue to capture profitably once you account for cost ofcustomer acquisition. That answer is worth more than a subscription.**Execution capacity,** which matters only once there is something worth executing. ## The sequence for a tight budget 1. **Do the market thinking yourself,** using free sources and one cheap tool. 2. **Get a free audit or market sizing** from an agency before committing capital. 3. **Buy sourcing and quality inspection.** Hardest to replace, most expensive to get wrong. 4. **Buy photography,** or invest serious time in learning it. 5. **Validate with 200 units and $5,000 to $10,000** before buying ongoing management. 6. **Add management in Phase 2,** once rating, conversion, and acquisition cost are proven. Step one is deliberate. The market decision is the one you most need to understand yourself, because you will be living with it for years and no agency can hold that judgment for you. ## What most agencies will not tell you An agency will rarely tell a beginner to spend the money on inventory instead. The honestversion is that management applied to an unvalidated product is optimizing a guess, howevergood the optimization. Equally, tool companies will not tell you that a subscription without a method produces afiltered spreadsheet and no decision. Both sides sell the thing they sell. The underused option is the free audit or market sizing. Most agencies offer one, ours returns a written report within 48 hours, and it costs nothing. For a beginner it is thehighest-value input available, precisely because it sometimes concludes that you should notlaunch this product at all. ## Related answers - [Amazon agency for startups with small budgets](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-agency-for-startups-with-small-budgets) - [Affordable Amazon account management for startups](https://flapen.com/blog/affordable-amazon-account-management-for-startups) - [Amazon product research help for brand new sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-product-research-help-for-brand-new-sellers) - [What tools do top Amazon agencies use](https://flapen.com/blog/what-tools-do-top-amazon-agencies-use) - [Hiring an Amazon agency: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/hiring-an-agency) Start with the free market sizing.
