![Flapen cover for Amazon Attribution and What Off-Channel Measurement Costs You: a re-shoot in the studio against a blank reference card](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fblog%2Fclusters%2Fmeasurement-and-audit-05.jpg&w=1536&q=100) Amazon Attribution is Amazon's measurement for traffic you send to Amazon from somewhere else. You tag a link, place it outside Amazon, and read what that traffic did once it arrived. Setting it up is the easy half, because the costly failures sit in the plan around the links, and every one of them shows itself early. ## The short version - **Attribution measures a channel rather than running one.** A tagged link reports what outside traffic did after it reached your listing. It improves nothing on its own. - **One tag per placement, decided before the first link exists.** A single tag stretched across creators, blogs, posts, and sends produces one row and one useless conclusion. - **The costliest failure sits upstream of the link.** Outside traffic aimed at a listing that does not convert charges you twice. - **Attributed sales is not profit.** Channel profitability is read through cost of customer acquisition (CAC), never through the revenue line a report leads with. - **One number predicts whether anyone reads the report.** The brands each account manager carries. Our operators carry about 1.4 each, and outside traffic is the first work a heavier load drops. ## The failures ranked by what they cost Measuring outside traffic breaks in five predictable places. The table ranks them by the money each destroys, costliest first, beside the signal that shows inside the first month. | Failure | What it costs | Early signal |
| --- | --- | --- | | Outside traffic aimed at a listing that does not convert | The placement and the session behind it, so one visitor is paid for twice | Tagged clicks arrive and unit volume stays flat | | Traffic bought for a product the four signals already condemned | A longer bill on a product whose window, usually 60 to 90 days, already closed | The reason given for the new channel is that the ads stopped working | | One tag shared across every placement | Every placement judged as a single row, so none of them can be stopped | The report holds fewer rows than you have placements | | Attributed sales read without the cost that produced them | Contribution margin below zero while the revenue line still grows | The channel is reported in sales and never in cost per order | | No named owner for the report | The channel itself, dropped first by an overloaded manager | You cannot name the person who read it last week | Ranked costliest first. Every signal above shows inside the first month. Our audit reads listing quality, primary image click-through rate, and conversion rate before any traffic question. The page is cheaper to fix than the traffic is to buy. Row two is the one sellers argue with. Four signals decide scale, fix, or kill: rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and cost of customer acquisition trajectory. A new traffic source does not overturn them. ## Amazon attribution links, one per placement Attribution links are the unit of the exercise, so the naming decides what the data is worth. Build one per placement and keep the name for the life of the campaign. | Placement | The failure it invites | The signal in the first month |
| --- | --- | --- | | A creator or influencer post | Revenue share and unit cost disappear under attributed sales | Cost per order is never quoted beside the revenue | | A blog or review article | Traffic keeps arriving after everyone stopped reading the report | The link gets built once and never opened again | | A social post or an outside ad | Outside spend is judged against Amazon sales instead of contribution margin | Spend is reported as one total for the month | | Your own list or community | The cheapest traffic you own shares a tag with everything else | One row covers four different sends | One tagged link per placement, named before the first one is built. Flapen figures as of September 2026. Read the table as a cost ranking. The creator row is the expensive one, because revenue share hides the acquisition cost inside a growth number. ## The ratio that decides whether anyone reads the report At Flapen, 50 operators run about 70 brands by hand, so the average load is about 1.4 brands per person. We publish it because it predicts the fate of outside traffic better than any capability slide. A manager holding eight brands does only what the client raised that week, and outside traffic is the work no client raises. So the test for any candidate, ours included, is two questions. Ask how many brands the person on your account carries. Then ask who read the outside traffic report last month and what they changed. Ask for the answer in names and dates. We report in writing every week, review live every two weeks, and traffic channel activation is one of the seven areas our written audit covers. With one product and two creator links, hire nobody. Build the links, name them, and read cost per order yourself for a month. No retainer survives that comparison. ## What an ads team will not tell you about outside traffic Four things stay out of the pitch, ranked by cost, and on a careless day the list includes us. - **Outside traffic gets sold on ranking before it is proven as a channel.** A rank benefit is easy to assert and slow to disprove, so it outlives the budget that funded it. The early signal is a proposal that describes rank and never cost per order. - **A fee tied to spend or to revenue bends every recommendation one way.** Restraint costs the adviser money, so ours is flat at $800 to $2,400 a month, with no commission on your media. You see it early when the fee model is explained before the work is. - **Free audits exist to start sales conversations, ours included.** Judge the document instead of the offer. The early signal is a report that names no ASIN, quotes no number, and leaves nothing to do on Monday. - **Nobody volunteers that a channel should be switched off.** A summary of wins means the losing placements are disappearing without a paragraph. It shows early in a report that has never once ended in a recommendation to stop. Run the same list on us. If our audit cannot name the placement, the number, and the fix that follows, hire nobody. ## Related answers - [Amazon ad types](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-ad-types) - [Amazon ads case studies](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-ads-case-studies) - [Global Amazon audit service with multi-market expertise](https://flapen.com/blog/global-amazon-audit-service-with-multi-market-expertise) - [How to localize A+ content for Germany and France](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-localize-a-content-for-germany-and-france) - [Amazon account measurement and audits: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/measurement-and-audit) This week, at no cost, list every place outside Amazon that already sends you traffic. It measures traffic you send to Amazon from outside Amazon, so you can tell which placement produced which result on your listing. It does not create demand, improve a listing, or change a bid, and it settles nothing about a product the four signals have already condemned. How do Amazon attribution links work in practice? You give each placement its own tagged link, placed where the traffic starts. The discipline is the naming, decided before the first link is built. Then read each link as a cost per order, not a revenue row.Is off-channel traffic worth running on a new product? Not before validation. Phase 1 is 200 units and $5,000 to $10,000, and its job is proving rating, conversion rate, and cost of customer acquisition. Off-channel carries a lower upfront cost and a slower start, which makes it a poor first test and a strong second one.Who should own attribution reporting? One named person, with the authority to stop a placement. An owner stretched across eight brands drops the channel nobody asks about first. That is why the brands-per-manager ratio comes before the capability questions.![The Flapen Weekly Product Research report, an Amazon niche shortlist scored 0–100 with its score radar on the cover](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fhomepage%2Famazon-product-research-report-dark.webp&w=640&q=100) The weekly niche report ## Product research, in your inbox Every niche that cleared the bar this week.
