An agency coordinates several under one fee. If your bottleneck is one thing, a freelancer is cheaper and often better. If you do not know which of listing quality, ads, sourcing, or pricing is broken, you are buying diagnosis, and a freelancer cannot sell you that. ## The short version - **Freelancer:** one skill, lower cost, no coverage, no diagnosis. - **Agency:** coordinated team, higher fixed cost, continuity, someone accountable. - **The deciding question:** do you know what is broken? - **Coverage is the hidden difference.** A freelancer on holiday is a stopped account. - **Ask the agency for a caseload number.** Ours is about 1.4 brands per operator. ## The honest comparison I run Flapen with 50 operators managing about 70 brands, so weigh this accordingly. Freelancers are the right answer more often than agencies like to admit. | | Freelancer | Agency |
| --- | --- | --- | | Cost | Lower, often hourly or per task | Fixed monthly, from $800 in our case | | Scope | One skill done well | Coordinated across skills | | Diagnosis | Rarely. You bring the brief | Should be the first thing delivered | | Coverage | None. Illness and holidays stop work | Team continuity | | Accountability | Direct, to one person | Named manager, coordinating others | | Speed to start | Days | Weeks, with an audit first | | Risk | Key-person dependency | Being a small account in a big book | ### When a freelancer is the right answer Three cases, clearly. You know exactly what is wrong and it is one thing. Your images need reshooting, your backend keywords need rebuilding, your A+ content needs designing. Buy that specific skill. Your ad spend is under about $1,000 a month. There is not enough data for meaningful optimization, so paying agency rates for ad management is poor value regardless of quality. You have operational capacity yourself. If you can hold the strategy and coordinate specialists, you are effectively running the agency function, and you should not pay someone else to do it too. ### When an agency earns the difference The diagnosis problem. If you cannot say whether your constraint is listing quality, primary image click-through rate, conversion rate, ad performance, traffic channel activation, pricing, or return rate, you need someone to work that out. A freelancer will optimize the thing they were hired to optimize, competently, whether or not it is the thing holding you back. That is the most common expensive mistake in this comparison. Paying a PPC freelancer to fix a conversion problem produces excellent bid management and no improvement, because if your conversion rate is low no amount of ad spend fixes it. The second case is channel coverage. There are five traffic channels: organic, paid, promotions, influencer and creator, and off-channel. Most sellers run two. A single freelancer almost always covers a portion of one. ## What about hiring several freelancers The usual middle path, and it works until it does not. You become the coordinator. That is a real job: keeping the photographer, the copywriter, the PPC specialist, and the sourcing agent aligned on one strategy, and noticing when their work conflicts. Sellers who enjoy operating do this well. Sellers who wanted to buy their time back discover they have bought a management job instead. Budget honestly for your own hours. Our clients spend about 2 hours a month after onboarding. Coordinating four freelancers is closer to several hours a week. ## How to compare cost fairly 1. **Add your own coordination time** to the freelancer column, at whatever your hour is worth. 2. **Add the cost of coverage gaps.** What does a two-week stall cost you? 3. **Ask what the agency fee actually includes.** Ours includes all 50 plus services at every tier with no add-ons. 4. **Exclude pass-through costs from both.** Inventory, Amazon fees, freight, ad spend. 5. **Price the diagnosis separately.** If you need it, a freelancer is not cheaper. They are not an option. ## What most agencies will not tell you The agency advantage is real but conditional, and the condition is caseload. An agency with a coordinated team is better than a lone freelancer. An agency where your named manager carries twelve brands is worse than a good freelancer who carries three clients and knows your account. So the comparison is not agency versus freelancer. It is attention versus attention. Ask any agency how many brands one account manager carries, and ask for the number in writing. We run about 1.4. Above eight, you are buying the org chart rather than the team. The other quiet point: freelancers rarely tell you when the problem is outside their skill, because saying so ends the engagement. Agencies rarely tell you when a freelancer would do, for the same reason. ## Related answers - [Amazon FBA agency for beginners](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-fba-agency-for-beginners) - [Compare Amazon PPC vs full-service agencies](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-amazon-ppc-vs-full-service-agencies) - [Is full service Amazon management worth it for a single SKU](https://flapen.com/blog/is-full-service-amazon-management-worth-it-for-a-single-sku) - [Affordable Amazon account management for startups](https://flapen.com/blog/affordable-amazon-account-management-for-startups) - [Hiring an Amazon agency: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/hiring-an-agency) If a freelancer would serve you better, we will say so.
