One broken function means a freelancer. Several functions with no owner means an agency. Good decisions with no visibility means software. Diagnose which situation you are actually in before comparing prices, because all three are quoting for different problems. ## The short version - **Two of five.** Most sellers run organic and paid, and leave the other three traffic channels switched off entirely. - **Price comparison is the last step, not the first.** These three sell different goods. - **The symptom tells you the buyer.** Work backwards from what is broken rather than forwards from a budget. - **Nobody in this list owns the gaps by default.** Write down who does. - **You can change your mind cheaply if the terms are short.** Long contracts are how a wrong diagnosis gets expensive. ## Start with the number that decides it There are five ways to put traffic on an Amazon listing: organic search, paid advertising, promotions and deals, influencer and creator content, and off-channel traffic driven from outside Amazon. Most sellers run two of them. That single fact settles a lot of arguments in this comparison, because it tells you where the ceiling on your current setup actually sits. If your ranking is fine, your conversion is fine, and revenue has stopped climbing, no bid tool and no better copywriter fixes that. You have run out of channel, not out of optimization. Adding a third and fourth channel is a coordination job with several skills in it, which is the one situation where a team beats both alternatives outright. Say your listing converts poorly against strong traffic. That is a page problem, and a photographer plus a copywriter will beat a retainer on cost. Say you cannot see what happened last week. That is a reporting problem, and a subscription solves it for less than an hour of anyone's time. ## Symptom, cause, and who fixes it | Symptom | Usual cause | Who to buy |
| --- | --- | --- | | Traffic healthy, conversion low | Images, price, or reviews on the detail page | Freelance creative, briefed against competitor complaints | | Ad spend rising, margin falling | No search term review, no negatives, one target for everything | Freelancer if ads are the only gap, team if they are not | | Rank fine, revenue flat | Channel concentration. Two channels running, three idle | Team, because the fix spans several skills | | Nobody can say what changed last week | No change log and no reporting rhythm | Software first, then a process | | Listings unchanged for six months | No owner for content | Freelancer if you brief well, team if you cannot | | Repeated stockouts during ranking pushes | Forecasting nobody does | Team, or a dedicated operations hire | | Account health warnings noticed late | Nobody reads notifications daily | Team, or twenty minutes of your own week | | One good product, everything working | Nothing is broken | Software plus your own hours | The bottom row matters as much as the others. If nothing on this list describes you, buy the subscription, keep the money, and revisit in six months. ## How to test each of the three**Freelancer.** Ask for the last brief they worked from and what they measured afterwards. A specialist who cannot describe the metric they moved is selling activity. Give them scoped, revocable access to your own account and never a shared login.**Agency.** Ask which of the five channels they run themselves, not which they can advise on. Ask who does the work and where those people sit. Ask for the cadence of written reporting. Ours is a written update each week and a live review every second week, with a channel open in between, and any team that cannot state its own rhythm has not got one.**Software.** Ask what decision it makes for you versus what it displays. Most of this category displays. That is useful and it is not management. ## What most agencies will not tell you An agency will rarely tell you that your problem is one broken thing, because the retainer is priced for many. I have written audits that concluded a client needed a photographer and a month of discipline, not us, and the honest version of this business includes losing those deals. The second thing: the freelancer route is cheaper on paper and more expensive in attention. Every specialist you add makes you the project manager, and coordination time is real time. Two is manageable. Four means you have quietly hired yourself into an operations role. The third: the channel question above is where most of the growth is hiding, and it is the least discussed part of every pitch, because it is the hardest part to staff. ## Related answers - [Compare done-for-you Amazon vs DIY software](https://flapen.com/blog/compare-done-for-you-amazon-vs-diy-software) - [Agency vs freelancer for Amazon Seller Central management](https://flapen.com/blog/agency-vs-freelancer-for-amazon-seller-central-management) - [Cost comparison Amazon freelancer agency software](https://flapen.com/blog/cost-comparison-amazon-freelancer-agency-software) - [Who to hire to run my Amazon FBA brand](https://flapen.com/blog/who-to-hire-to-run-my-amazon-fba-brand) - [Build vs buy for your Amazon channel: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/build-vs-buy) If you want the diagnosis written down before you buy anything, the free 48 hour audit does exactly that at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Compare Amazon business models](https://flapen.com/guides/business-models) - [Value your Amazon business](https://flapen.com/tools/business-value-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Can I combine all three?Which is fastest to get running? How do I compare prices fairly? What if I pick wrong?Does the answer change by marketplace? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
