The right one depends on whether you need words, images, or someone accountable for the conversion rate afterwards. ## The short version - **Decide what you are actually buying.** Keyword data, written copy, images, and accountability for results are four separate purchases. - **Software gives you inputs, not outcomes.** A keyword list is raw material, and someone still has to turn it into a listing that sells. - **Images move conversion more than copy in most categories.** Budget accordingly, because that is rarely where sellers spend. - **A rewrite without a measurement window is a guess.** Change, wait, read the data, then change again. - **I will not rate any named tool here.** Features and pricing move faster than any article can track, so evaluate the current version yourself against the tests below. ## Start with the mistake this question usually hides The expensive error is treating listing optimization as a one-time deliverable. A seller buys a rewrite, pastes it in, sees no change in two weeks, and concludes the copy was bad. Usually the copy was fine and the process was wrong: nothing was measured before the change, several elements moved at once, and the traffic mix afterwards was different from the traffic mix before. A listing is not a document. It is a conversion instrument with four parts: title and keyword coverage, image stack, A+ content, and offer. Shoppers read those four together, and the algorithm reads them separately. Any replacement you pick has to handle the measurement, not just the words. ## The failure modes, ranked by what they cost | Failure mode | What it costs you | The fix |
| --- | --- | --- | | Keyword-stuffed copy that indexes well and reads badly | Traffic arrives, conversion falls, ranking then decays | Write for the shopper, place terms where they earn a click | | Primary image never tested | The single biggest lever on click-through sits untouched for months | Test primary images deliberately, one variable at a time | | Copy rewritten, offer untouched | Price, pack size, and shipping promise still lose the comparison | Fix the offer first, then argue for it in the copy | | Five changes shipped on the same day | Nothing is attributable, so nothing is learned | One change per measurement window | | No baseline captured | You cannot prove improvement, so the next decision is guesswork | Screenshot the metrics before you touch anything | | Optimized for a term nobody buys under | Impressions look healthy, orders do not follow | Rank the terms by purchase intent, not by volume | Work down that list in order. The first two account for most of the gap between a listing that converts and one that does not, and neither of them is a writing problem. ## What each alternative is good at 1. **Keyword software plus your own writing.** Cheapest, and workable if you know your customer better than any outsider will. You supply judgment, the tool supplies coverage. 2. **A freelance copywriter with category experience.** Good value when your images are already strong and the copy is the weak link. Ask for before-and-after conversion data on two past clients, not a portfolio of pretty text. 3. **A specialist creative studio.** The right call when photography and A+ content are the constraint. Judge them on primary-image click-through work, not on brand mood boards. 4. **A managed agency running listing and advertising together.** The only option where one party is accountable for the outcome, because the same team writes the listing and reads the ad data proving whether it converted. ## How to measure a listing change honestly Advertising data is the fastest clean read you have on a listing change, because you control the keyword and the spend. Run the same campaign into the old and new versions and compare conversion rate at the same keyword, then judge efficiency against the product's stage. A launch and a mature product should never be held to the same advertising cost of sale, and any partner who quotes one target number for both has not thought about it. Ask a candidate for the number they run at launch and the number they run at maturity. Two different answers with a reason attached is the sign of an operator. At Flapen the listing and the ad account belong to the same operator for exactly this reason, with a written update every week and a live review every second week so the client sees the before and after rather than a claim about it. ## What most agencies will not tell you Listing optimization is the easiest service to sell and the hardest to be held to, because the deliverable is visible and the result is not. That asymmetry is why so many packages end at delivery of the copy. The other quiet part: many rewrites improve the listing and still show flat sales, because the constraint was elsewhere. Price against the top competitor, a return rate signaling a product problem, or an image stack that never earned the click in the first place. A good partner will tell you the copy is not your problem when the copy is not your problem, even though the copy is the thing they were about to invoice you for. ## Related answers - [Rank the best Amazon listing optimization plus PPC bundles](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-the-best-amazon-listing-optimization-plus-ppc-bundles) - [Optimize A+ content in first month](https://flapen.com/blog/optimize-a-content-in-first-month) - [Rank new Amazon listing fast without reviews](https://flapen.com/blog/rank-new-amazon-listing-fast-without-reviews) - [What does a good Amazon account audit include](https://flapen.com/blog/what-does-a-good-amazon-account-audit-include) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) Send a listing and we will tell you which of the four parts is costing you the most, free, at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Do I need a paid tool for keyword research at all?How long should I wait before judging a listing change?Copy or images first, if I can only afford one?Should the same team run my listing and my ads?How do I evaluate a listing service before paying? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
