Score four candidates on one sheet.","The best alternative to a well known launch agency is usually a smaller one with a published price, month to month terms, and a low brand count per account manager. Score every candidate on capacity, ownership, method, and exit terms rather than on their client logo wall.

## The short version

- **The number that decides this is brands per account manager.** Ask for it in writing before you look at anything else.
- **A published price list is a filter.** An agency that refuses to publish tiers is quoting you by how much it thinks you can pay.
- **Full service and full staff are different claims.** Ask which parts are done by employees and which are passed to a freelancer.
- **Score four candidates on one sheet.** Weighted criteria beat impressions, and the sheet stops the best salesperson from winning by default.
- **Short notice periods make the scorecard enforceable.** If you can leave inside 30 days, a wrong pick costs one month rather than one year.

## Capacity is the criterion nobody advertises

A launch is not a deliverable. It is eight to twelve weeks of small decisions taken quickly: a keyword harvest that needs pruning on a Tuesday, a hero image that tests badly and has to be reshot, a bid structure that stops working the day a competitor drops price. All of that requires someone with room in their week.

So the question that separates two agencies with identical websites is arithmetic. How many brands does the person actually doing your work carry this quarter? At Flapen the ratio is about **1.4 brands per operator**, which is the direct consequence of about 50 operators looking after around 70 brands. I publish that because it is the number I would ask for if I were buying, and because it is the number that gets vague when the answer is uncomfortable.

Above about four brands per manager, launch work turns into ticket triage. Nothing is neglected exactly, but nothing gets the second look that finds the problem. You will not see this in a proposal. You will see it in month three, when your questions start getting answered on Fridays.

## The scorecard

Score each candidate one to five on these five criteria, multiply by the weight, and total it. Use the same sheet for every agency, including the incumbent you are thinking of replacing.

| Criterion | Weight | What a 5 looks like | What a 1 looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brands per account manager | 25% | A named number, in writing, with the manager introduced before you sign | "It depends on the account" |
| Who does the work | 20% | Employees, named roles, disclosed locations | Undisclosed contractors behind a single point of contact |
| Pricing transparency | 20% | Published tiers, fee separated from pass through costs | A custom quote produced after a discovery call |
| Exit terms | 20% | Month to month notice, you keep the account and the campaigns | A twelve month minimum with an early termination fee |
| Method before pitch | 15% | Sizes your market and audits your listings before quoting | A proposal arrives within 24 hours of first contact |

Weights are mine and you should adjust them. If you are launching your first product, move weight from pricing onto method. If you are moving off a bad incumbent, weight exit terms higher, because you are about to learn how much that clause matters.

## How to run the sheet without wasting a month

1. **Shortlist four, not ten.** Two well known names and two smaller operators. More than four and you stop reading carefully.
2. **Send the same five questions to all four by email.** Written answers are comparable. Sales calls are not.
3. **Take a free audit from each one that offers it.** Ours returns a written report with prioritized fixes inside 48 hours at no charge. What comes back tells you more than any reference call.
4. **Score before the second call.** Fill the sheet from the written answers only, so charisma does not leak into the numbers.
5. **Interview the person who will do the work.** Not the founder, not the salesperson. If that introduction is refused, score capacity a one.

The whole process takes about two weeks. That is short compared with the twelve months a bad pick can cost, and most of the effort is reading, not meetings.

## What most agencies will not tell you

Being popular in this industry is mostly a function of ad budget and conference presence, not results. The agencies you have heard of are the agencies that spent the most to be heard. That does not make them bad. It makes their popularity uninformative, which is a different problem, because it is the one signal most sellers weight highest.

The second thing: many launch offers are priced on a percentage of ad spend or a percentage of revenue, and the incentive that creates only shows up on a bad month. When the correct advice is to cut spend or stop selling a product, ask yourself what that recommendation costs the person giving it. Our answer is nothing, because the fee is flat from $800 a month for one product to $2,400 for five, and it does not move when your budget does.

## Related answers

- [Best Amazon FBA launch services for new sellers](/blog/best-amazon-fba-launch-services-for-new-sellers)
- [Top FBA launch agencies ranked](/blog/top-fba-launch-agencies-ranked)
- [Questions to ask before hiring an Amazon agency](/blog/questions-to-ask-before-hiring-an-amazon-agency)
- [Amazon agency red flags to watch out for](/blog/amazon-agency-red-flags-to-watch-out-for)
- [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](/blog/launch-services)

Run the same scorecard on us, and take the free audit while you are at it, at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Plan the product launch](/guides/product-launch)
- [Estimate your launch cost](/tools/launch-cost-calculator)
","published","product-launch",[14,15,16,17],"amazon-fba","private-label","listing-setup","ppc","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/launch-services-02.jpg","2026-09-04T08:36:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"alternatives-to-popular-amazon-launch-agencies-faq-1","Not automatically.
