Choose by what you need judged rather than executed. Software and freelancers execute what you specify. Only an agency or an employee will tell you a product should be stopped. ## The short version - **Execution and judgment are different purchases.** Most people shop for the first and need the second. - **Nobody who is paid per task will tell you to stop.** Build the stop decision into the arrangement deliberately. - **Ask every option the same questions.** The comparison only works if the questions are identical. - **I will not rate named vendors.** I cannot verify anyone else's current offering, so I will give you the test instead. - **The stop criteria are the real differentiator.** Any option that has none is selling you activity. ## The mistake this question usually hides Most sellers comparing launch services are comparing feature lists. Feature lists across this category converge, because everyone offers listing creation, keyword research, imagery and advertising setup. Comparing them produces a spreadsheet that says nothing. I know what the mistake costs because I made an expensive version of it myself. Early on I kept funding a product that was not working for three months, convinced that better advertising would turn it around. It did not. That money did not disappear because I lacked a tool or a checklist. It disappeared because nothing in my process was going to tell me to stop, and I was not going to tell myself. Everything I now look for in a launch service traces back to that. The scale, fix or stop criteria are the product. Everything else is administration. ## The checklist to run against every alternative Ask each option the same eleven questions. Write down the answers side by side. 1. **What would make you tell me to stop selling this product?** A good answer names rating trend, return rate, conversion rate and acquisition cost trajectory over a defined window. 2. **Who does the work, and where do they sit?** You want names and a location, not a capability statement. 3. **How many accounts does the person on mine also handle?** Attention frequency is the variable that decides whether weekly work actually happens. 4. **What do you analyze before quoting?** If a price arrives before anyone has sized the category, you are being sold hours. 5. **What is the advertising target at launch and at maturity?** Two numbers, plus the date you intend to move between them. 6. **What happens to my account if we stop working together?** You should keep Seller Central, campaigns, creative, and receive a written handover. 7. **What access do you need?** Granted user permissions on your own account, revocable by you at any time. Never your login. 8. **How is this priced, and what is excluded?** Separate the fee from pass-through costs before comparing anything. 9. **What is the notice period?** Month to month with 30 days' notice is achievable. Anything longer needs justifying. 10. **Who owns the deliverables?** Creative and listings should become your intellectual property on payment. 11. **Show me a real weekly update.** Anonymised is fine. One page of it tells you more than a proposal does. ## How the four categories tend to answer | Option | Strong on | Weak on | Fits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Software plus your own labor | Cost, control, learning | Judgment, time, stop decisions | First product, capital constrained | | Freelance specialists | Cheap per task, flexible | Nobody owns the outcome across tasks | You know exactly what you need done | | In-house hire | Full attention, institutional memory | Salary, hiring risk, single skill set | Portfolio large enough to justify it | | Managed agency | Breadth, process, outside judgment | Fee, and quality varies enormously | You want the whole outcome owned | The pattern worth noticing is in the weakness column. Software and freelancers are excellent at doing what you asked. Neither will look at the account and tell you the honest thing, because that is not what either is paid for. If you choose one of those routes, you must supply the stop criteria yourself, in writing, before you launch. ## What most agencies will not tell you An agency's incentive under a flat fee is to keep the product alive, because a killed product can shrink the engagement. We price by product count, so recommending a stop can reduce our own invoice. I mention that because you should assume every provider has a similar tension somewhere and ask them to name theirs. The second thing: much of what is sold as a launch service is a sequence of tasks anyone can perform, wrapped around one difficult decision, which is whether the product should exist at all. Pay for that decision. The tasks are the cheap part. ## Related answers - [Best done-for-you Amazon launch services](https://flapen.com/blog/best-done-for-you-amazon-launch-services) - [Is done-for-you Amazon launch worth it for new sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/is-done-for-you-amazon-launch-worth-it-for-new-sellers) - [Questions to ask before hiring an Amazon agency](https://flapen.com/blog/questions-to-ask-before-hiring-an-amazon-agency) - [Amazon agency vs in-house team pros and cons](https://flapen.com/blog/amazon-agency-vs-in-house-team-pros-and-cons) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) Put those eleven questions to us before you put them to anyone else, and see the answers in writing at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**What should the stop criteria actually contain? Is software alone enough for a first launch? Are freelancers cheaper than an agency overall? When does hiring in house make sense? How do I compare two proposals fairly? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
