A wrong product costs $8,000 to $15,000 in capital plus months of attention, so research that reduces the chance of being wrong is cheap almost regardless of what it charges, and research that only produces confidence is expensive at any price. ## The short version - **The expensive thing is the wrong product, not the tool.** Price every research method against that number. - **Amazon's own reporting is the cheapest reliable input.** Opportunity and ranking data, plus Brand Analytics once you are brand registered. - **Supplier quotes are research.** Landed cost disqualifies more candidates than any dashboard ever will. - **A small paid test buys evidence a model cannot.** Real conversion on real traffic beats an estimate of both. - **The benchmark that matters is the outcome.** Ask anyone advising you what share of the products they recommend are profitable in year one. ## The arithmetic nobody runs Start with what a decision is worth. A single product launch takes $8,000 to $15,000 of capital before it can be judged, and a five-product brand takes $25,000 to $50,000. A full brand launch runs about seven months. So one bad product selection costs about the price of the launch plus two thirds of a year that could have been spent on a good one. Now put research against that. | Method | What it costs | What it reduces | Cost per decision it improves |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Amazon opportunity and ranking reports | Free with an account | Guessing about demand and competition | Effectively zero | | Brand Analytics search query data | Free once brand registered | Guessing about share and intent | Effectively zero | | Reading competitor reviews by hand | Ten to fifteen hours | Wrong differentiation, wrong product spec | The cost of your own time | | Three supplier quotes with freight | Free to request, slow | Margin that dies at landed cost | Time, plus sample cost | | A small exploratory ad campaign | A few hundred dollars | Guessing about conversion and search terms | Low, and the data is yours | | Paid research subscription | A monthly fee | Time spent screening many candidates | Low if screening many, poor if screening one | | Phase one validation run | 200 units, $5,000 to $10,000 | Everything the desk research cannot resolve | The highest cost and the highest certainty | Read the right-hand column rather than the middle one. The subscription is not expensive. It is priced for a job most first-time sellers do not have, which is screening dozens of categories quickly. If you are choosing between two candidates you already know, the same money spent on samples and a small ad test buys you a better answer. ## What replaces the dashboard, method by method**Amazon's own opportunity and category reporting.** First party demand signal, updated by the marketplace itself. It answers what is selling and how the top of the category is moving, without a model in between.**Brand Analytics.** Once brand registered, you see the actual search queries in your category and how clicks and conversions distributed. This is the closest thing to ground truth available to a seller.**Systematic review reading.** Not skimming. Pull the negative and three star reviews across the products that own the page, sort the complaints into themes, and count them. This is where the product specification comes from.**Supplier and factory input.** What a factory is already tooled for, what its minimum order quantity is, and what a landed unit actually costs are research findings, and they arrive from quotes rather than software. Our sourcing runs through an in-house studio in Guangzhou, and the number of promising candidates that die at the quote stage is high enough that we now get quotes earlier than most people expect.**A paid micro-test.** A small campaign on a close substitute returns real search terms and real conversion behavior. It costs money and it produces evidence rather than an estimate.**Phase one validation.** Around 200 units and $5,000 to $10,000, with as many as four products tested at once, and scaling only when rating, conversion rate and acquisition cost are proven. Every desk method above is trying to make this step cheaper. None of them replace it. ## The benchmark to hold any research process to The output of product research is not a spreadsheet. It is a portfolio outcome. The number I would ask for is what share of the products chosen through a given process were profitable within their first year. At Flapen the majority of the brands we manage are profitable within year one, and that is the figure I would want anyone selling you research to state plainly for their own work. If a process cannot report that, it is not a process. It is a habit. ## What most agencies will not tell you Research is the easiest deliverable to inflate. A hundred-row spreadsheet of candidate products looks like a month of work and can be produced in an afternoon by anyone with a subscription. The expensive part is the disqualification: the quotes that killed twelve candidates, the reviews that showed the gap was cosmetic, the market that was too small to be worth entering. So ask for the rejected list, not the recommended one, and ask why each candidate died. A researcher who cannot tell you what they threw away has not done the part you are paying for. That question works on us too, and it is a better test than any comparison of software. ## Related answers - [How to find a winning product for Amazon FBA](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-find-a-winning-product-for-amazon-fba) - [Recommend a product research framework for Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/recommend-a-product-research-framework-for-amazon) - [How to validate Amazon product demand fast](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-validate-amazon-product-demand-fast) - [Alternatives to Helium 10 for keyword research](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-helium-10-for-keyword-research) - [Amazon seller roadmaps and capital: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/roadmaps-and-capital) Ask us to run a candidate product through the full research set before you place an order, at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Set up your Amazon seller account](https://flapen.com/guides/account-setup) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Can I do serious product research without any paid tool? When is a paid research subscription worth it?How accurate are sales estimates from any tool? What research step do beginners skip most often? How long should product research take? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
