That is the market size floor a category has to clear before a private label product is worth launching, and a beginner can measure it with Amazon's own Product Opportunity Explorer, public best seller ranks, and a spreadsheet. Any research tool is a shortcut to that number, not a substitute for it. ## The short version - **Score the method, not the brand of software.** Every serious option answers the same five questions with different amounts of your time. - **Amazon's own tools are the cheapest accurate source.** Brand Registry unlocks demand data straight from the platform. - **Free browser extensions and manual sampling still work.** Slower, and good enough for a first product. - **A market below two million dollars a year rarely repays the effort.** There is not enough revenue to capture profitably once you account for acquiring customers. - **Beginners overpay for estimates and underpay for supplier quotes.** Reverse that. ## Score any research option out of 100 Do not compare tools feature by feature. Score each candidate approach on what it lets you decide. Weight the criteria like this and score each option from one to five, then multiply. | Criterion | Weight | What a five looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | | Market sizing you can trust | 30 | Gives category revenue you can sanity check against public rank data | | Competitive depth read | 25 | Shows the rating gap and review defects across the top ten listings | | Keyword and demand detail | 20 | Real search terms with conversion signal, not guessed volume | | Cost against your first order | 15 | Total annual cost is a rounding error next to your inventory spend | | Time to a decision | 10 | Gets you from a blank page to a shortlist in a working week | Anything scoring above 350 is fit for a first launch. Below 250 you are buying comfort rather than clarity. ### How the common options score in practice**Amazon Product Opportunity Explorer and Brand Analytics.** Strongest on sizing and demand detail because the data is Amazon's own. Requires Brand Registry, which requires a trademark, so it is available to sellers who have done the groundwork and not to someone browsing on day one.**Free extensions and public rank sampling.** Weak on precision, strong on cost. You read the best seller rank of the top listings, sample over several days, and build a rough revenue band yourself. Slow, but it teaches you the category properly.**Manual review mining plus a spreadsheet.** Poor on sizing, excellent on competitive depth. This is where you find the reason a customer would switch, which is the input no estimator provides.**A paid research suite from any vendor.** Fast to a shortlist, and the estimates are models rather than reported figures. Score it high on time to decision and treat its revenue numbers as a hypothesis.**A supplier catalog walk.** Underrated. Starting from what factories can actually make, at what minimum order and what unit cost, inverts the usual process and kills unviable ideas before you fall in love with them. ## The sizing method the tools are standing in for 1. **List the top twenty listings for the main search term.** Not the top three. 2. **Record best seller rank for each, three times across a week.** Rank moves, and a single reading misleads. 3. **Convert rank to a monthly unit band using whatever public conversion table your category has.** Bands, never point estimates. 4. **Multiply by the median selling price.** That is your visible category revenue. 5. **Compare against the two million dollar floor.** Under it, you are competing for a prize too small to fund customer acquisition. Over it, keep going. 6. **Now check whether the revenue is concentrated.** If two listings hold most of it and both sit above 4.6 stars, the category is large but closed. Step six is the one beginners skip. Market size tells you the prize. Concentration and rating tell you whether it is available. ## Where the money should actually go A research subscription is one of the smallest line items in a launch. Total upfront capital for one product usually lands between eight and fifteen thousand dollars once inventory, freight, imagery, and opening ad spend are counted, and a five product range sits between twenty five and fifty thousand. Against those numbers, arguing about a monthly subscription is a distraction, while skipping a paid inspection or a second supplier quote is a genuine risk. At Flapen we validate before we scale: a first phase of a few hundred units and a small budget, with up to four products tested in parallel, and expansion only once rating, conversion rate, and acquisition cost are proven. That structure exists because guessing at scale is what bankrupts new sellers, not choosing the wrong software. ## What most agencies will not tell you Most agencies will not tell you that they cannot size your market either unless someone sits down and does it. Sizing is unglamorous work and there is no dashboard that outputs a defensible number, so the step gets skipped and replaced with enthusiasm about demand and search volume. Use this as your test when you talk to anyone: ask them to size the market before they quote you a fee. If a proposal arrives with a monthly price and no revenue estimate for the category, no view on concentration, and no rating gap, they have sold you a service without checking whether the opportunity is worth servicing. That question is free to ask and it separates operators from salespeople quickly. ## Related answers - [Alternatives to Helium 10 for niche research](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-helium-10-for-niche-research) - [How to validate Amazon product demand fast](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-validate-amazon-product-demand-fast) - [Product criteria checklist for Amazon private label](https://flapen.com/blog/product-criteria-checklist-for-amazon-private-label) - [Questions to ask before hiring an Amazon agency](https://flapen.com/blog/questions-to-ask-before-hiring-an-amazon-agency) - [Amazon seller roadmaps and capital: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/roadmaps-and-capital) The market sizing work sits at the front of every engagement at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Set up your Amazon seller account](https://flapen.com/guides/account-setup) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Do I need a paid tool for my first product? Why two million dollars as the floor? Is Brand Analytics available before I have a trademark? How do I check a tool's revenue estimates? What should I do if the market is too small? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
