A template audit describes your account. A real one tells you what to do first. ## The short version - **A generic audit is a sales document** with your screenshots pasted into someone's template. - **The test is prioritization.** Forty findings with no ranking is a data dump, not an audit. - **Coverage matters as much as depth.** Ads-only audits miss the levers that move most accounts. - **A serious audit names what to stop**, not just what to add. - **Free is fine.** We deliver a written, prioritized audit in 48 hours at no charge. Judge any audit on its content, not its price. ## The failure modes, ranked by what they cost you I have read hundreds of audits that sellers received elsewhere and brought to us. The failures repeat, so here they are, ordered by the damage they do. 1. **The ads-only audit.** The most common and the most expensive. Advertising is where audit tools are easiest to point, so the whole document becomes bid architecture. But most accounts I open are not losing primarily on bids. They are losing on the page and on unused channels. There are five traffic channels available to an Amazon brand: organic, paid, promotions, influencer and creator, and off-channel. Most sellers run two. An audit that never checks channel activation cannot see the growth that costs the least. 2. **The findings dump.** Forty observations, no weighting, no sequence. This fails because attention is the scarce resource. If everything is a finding, nothing is a decision, and the account looks the same six months later. 3. **The audit that skips economics.** Listing scores and keyword coverage mean little if the audit never touches pricing, return rate, or contribution margin. An account can pass every cosmetic check and still lose money per unit. 4. **The self-serving audit.** Every finding happens to match a service the auditor sells, and nothing outside their catalog exists. Real accounts have problems in inconvenient places. 5. **The audit with no stop list.** Additions only. Yet the highest-return finding in many accounts is a product, campaign, or marketplace that should be shut down. An audit that cannot say stop is negotiating, not auditing. ## What a real one covers instead Ours runs the same seven areas on every account, because these are the levers that actually move performance: listing quality, primary image click-through rate, conversion rate, ad performance, traffic channel activation, pricing, and return rate. The deliverable is written, prioritized, and returned within 48 hours, free. When listing quality or conversion tops the priority list, which it does more often than any ads finding, the work it points to is [listing optimization](https://flapen.com/amazon-listing-optimization). The format matters as much as the coverage. Each finding carries three things: the evidence, the expected impact, and who should fix it. That last column is the honest one, because some fixes belong to you, not to any agency. ## What a free audit will not tell you Every free audit, including mine, exists because the auditor hopes you become a client. That is the deal, and pretending otherwise would insult you. The difference worth testing is whether the document survives the disclosure. Strip the pitch off and ask: would this list of priorities still be useful if I never spoke to this company again. A generic audit fails that test because its findings are interchangeable across accounts. An operator audit passes because the evidence is yours: your image click-through, your return rate on a specific ASIN, your unused channels. The second thing: an audit is a snapshot, and accounts drift. Whatever you fix this quarter, the same seven areas need re-reading next quarter, by you or by whoever runs the account. ## Related answers - [How to audit an Amazon agency report](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-audit-an-amazon-agency-report) - [Who offers the most thorough Amazon account audit](https://flapen.com/blog/who-offers-the-most-thorough-amazon-account-audit) - [Full-funnel Amazon audit vs PPC-only audit](https://flapen.com/blog/full-funnel-amazon-audit-vs-ppc-only-audit) - [Competitor analysis methods in an Amazon growth audit](https://flapen.com/blog/competitor-analysis-methods-in-an-amazon-growth-audit) - [Amazon creative services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/creative-services) To see the seven-area audit run on your own account this week, request it at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Optimize the listing](https://flapen.com/guides/listing-optimization) - [Run the review math](https://flapen.com/tools/review-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**How do I spot a template audit before paying for one?Is a paid audit better than a free one? What should an audit deliverable physically look like? Can I audit my own account instead? What is the fastest signal an account has been under-audited?Why should an audit include a stop list? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
