Pick by weekly job count.","Your real alternatives are a freelancer for one channel, a PPC-only specialist, software plus your own hours, an in-house hire, or staying solo with quarterly consulting. Pick by counting the jobs your account actually needs each week. If that list crosses three disciplines, the alternatives cost more than they save.

## The short version

- **Five genuine alternatives exist,** and each one is the right answer for a specific account shape.
- **The deciding variable is job count,** not budget. Write down every weekly task your account needs before pricing anything.
- **Single-channel help works for single-problem accounts.** It fails quietly when the problem sits in a channel nobody was hired to watch.
- **In-house beats agencies at scale,** once the payroll is cheaper than the fee and the recruiting risk is survivable.
- **Whoever runs your ads, test them the same way.** Ask for their target ACoS at launch and at maturity. One number is a wrong answer.

## The mistake that makes this decision expensive

The common error is choosing the vehicle before listing the cargo. A seller decides "agencies are overpriced, I will hire a freelancer," and only later discovers the account needed keyword work, image testing, and inventory forecasting in the same month. Each gap becomes another hire, and by the third contractor the seller is running a small agency with none of the coordination.

So before comparing options, write the actual weekly job list for your account: campaigns, listings, creative, stock, pricing, customer messages, catalog health. The list, not the budget, tells you which alternative below can carry it.

## The five alternatives, and what done properly means

1. **A freelancer who owns one channel.** Works when you have exactly one weak area and you can describe it precisely. Done properly means a written scope, access through your own Seller Central permissions, and a deliverable you could hand to a successor. It breaks when the freelancer's channel improves while an unwatched one decays.
2. **A PPC-only specialist.** Works when your listings already convert and traffic cost is the genuine bottleneck. Done properly means restructured campaigns you own, not a black-box tool reading your data. It breaks when conversion was the real problem, because more efficient traffic into a weak listing just loses money more precisely.
3. **Software plus your own hours.** Works when you have ten or more hours a week and the discipline to use them. A keyword tracker, a repricer, and a review tool cost a fraction of any human option. It breaks the month your day job or your supply chain eats those hours.
4. **An in-house hire.** Works at scale, when one salary undercuts the fees it replaces and you can afford a mis-hire. Done properly means hiring an operator who has run accounts, not a marketer who has watched them. It breaks below that scale, where one person cannot cover five disciplines and a resignation takes your whole channel knowledge out the door.
5. **Quarterly consulting while you execute.** Works for experienced sellers who want direction, not hands. Done properly means each session ends with a prioritized list you actually clear. It breaks for beginners, who need the execution more than the advice.

## One test that applies to every option

Whoever ends up touching your advertising, interview them with a single question: what ACoS will you target, and when does it change? The correct answer has at least two numbers, an aggressive one during launch when you are buying ranking, and an efficient one at maturity when you are harvesting it. A candidate who names one fixed target, or promises the same efficiency from day one, is reciting a spreadsheet rather than running a strategy. This question filters freelancers, software salespeople, and agencies equally well, including mine.

## What most agencies will not tell you

Most sellers asking this question do not need a cheaper version of full service. They need less service, better chosen. About a third of the accounts that approach us would be fine with a specialist or a good tool stack for the next six months, and we say so in the audit, because a client who outgrows the alternatives arrives later with a healthier account.

The other omission: full service is only expensive when it is priced like a secret. Ours starts at $800 a month for one product with every service included, published on [our pricing page](/pricing), month to month with 30 days' notice. Compare alternatives against a real number, not against the four-figure horror quote a salesperson used as an anchor.

## Related answers

- [Alternatives to big legacy Amazon agencies](/blog/alternatives-to-big-legacy-amazon-agencies)
- [Alternatives to hiring an in house Amazon team](/blog/alternatives-to-hiring-an-in-house-amazon-team)
- [Amazon agency vs freelancer for private label](/blog/amazon-agency-vs-freelancer-for-private-label)
- [Compare Amazon account management retainers](/blog/compare-amazon-account-management-retainers)
- [Amazon brand management tiers: the complete guide](/blog/brand-tiers)

If the job list says you do need full service, the free audit at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting) will show you what that looks like on your account before you spend anything.

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16,17],"ppc","amazon-fba","fees","keyword-strategy","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/brand-tiers-06.jpg","2026-09-04T15:20:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"alternatives-to-full-service-amazon-agencies-faq-1","Software plus your own hours, if the hours are real.
