Freelancer marketplaces price the hour, but Amazon accounts fail on coordination between listings, advertising, inventory, and pricing, which hourly work does not cover. Run the arithmetic below on total cost of ownership before choosing on rate. ## The short version - **The hourly rate is the smallest cost in the system.** Coordination, rework, and unowned outcomes are where the money actually goes. - **Amazon is a coordination business.** A listing change moves ad performance, which moves pricing room, which moves inventory planning. Task-by-task help breaks that chain. - **Three structures can run an account.** Assembled freelancers, an agency, or an employee. Only the arithmetic tells you which is cheapest for you. - **You become the project manager by default.** Price your own hours into the freelancer option, because that is where they go. - **Judge any option on outcomes owned.** Ask what percentage of the provider's accounts reach profitability, and how they know. ## The cost model sellers skip Freelancer marketplaces present a seductive number: a low hourly rate against an agency retainer. The comparison fails because it prices inputs on one side and outcomes on the other. Here is the full model, with the line items hourly platforms leave off. | Cost line | Assembled freelancers | Specialist agency | In-house hire |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | | Direct fees | Hourly, per specialist | Flat monthly fee | Salary plus benefits | | Your coordination time | High, you are the integrator | Low, about 2 hours a month at Flapen | Medium, you manage the person | | Rework and handoff loss | High across specialists | Low if one team | Low | | Coverage breadth | Only what you hired | Full service scope | One person's skill set | | Vacation and churn risk | You re-hire and re-brief | Absorbed by the team | Concentrated in one person | | Outcome ownership | Nobody | Contractual, ask for evidence | The employee, with your ceiling | Fill this in with your own numbers and the ranking often reverses. Five capable freelancers at modest rates, each needing briefs, reviews, and integration, cost you the equivalent of a working day per week in management. If your time prices at anything reasonable, the cheap option is no longer cheap. For scale, our flat fee runs $800 a month for a single product up to $2,400 for five, with every service included, and the client's time commitment after onboarding is about two hours a month. Whatever provider you consider, build this same table honestly. ## Where assembled freelancers win The model is not a scam, it is a scope. A one-off listing rewrite, a photography set, a single A+ page: bounded, verifiable tasks with clean handoffs suit freelance specialists well, and I have seen excellent individual work come out of these platforms. The failure begins when a growing account needs continuous, interlocking decisions and the seller keeps procuring them as disconnected tasks. Advertising drifts while the listing project finishes. Inventory runs out while the PPC specialist optimizes toward a stockout. Nobody is looking at the whole. ## The outcome question that settles it Whoever you shortlist, ask one question: of the accounts you have worked on in the past two years, what share reached profitability, and how do you know? A task-based freelancer honestly cannot answer, because they never see the P&L. An agency must answer. At Flapen, the majority of brands we manage become profitable within their first year, and we track it because profitability is the deliverable, not activity. Any structure you choose should be able to state its equivalent number, and the ones that measure nothing will manage your account the same way. It also helps to ask what work they refuse: we turn down products whose [market research](https://flapen.com/research) does not clear our entry criteria, and a provider with no refusal standard will happily bill hours against an unwinnable niche. ## What hourly platforms will not tell you Ratings on freelancer marketplaces measure client satisfaction with the interaction, not the account outcome. A five-star listing optimizer can leave behind beautiful copy that never ranks, and the review system will never catch it, because the seller rated the deliverable the week it arrived. The platforms also cannot show you the integration cost, since it lands on your calendar, not their invoice. None of this means avoid freelancers. It means the platform's information tells you about professionalism, and nothing about profit. ## Related answers - [Full-service Amazon agency vs freelancer Europe](https://flapen.com/blog/full-service-amazon-agency-vs-freelancer-europe) - [Alternatives to hiring in-house Amazon team Europe](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-hiring-in-house-amazon-team-europe) - [Affordable Amazon FBA management for startups](https://flapen.com/blog/affordable-amazon-fba-management-for-startups) - [Full service Amazon account management for brands](https://flapen.com/blog/full-service-amazon-account-management-for-brands) - [Amazon marketplaces by geography: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/geography-and-marketplaces) Price the coordinated alternative against your current setup at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Expand to new channels](https://flapen.com/guides/channel-expansion) - [Find Amazon warehouse locations](https://flapen.com/tools/warehouse-locations) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**When is a freelancer clearly the right choice over an agency? How many freelancers does full account coverage actually take? What should I put in a freelancer brief to protect quality? Is a hybrid model workable, agency plus freelancers? How do I compare an agency retainer against my own hours honestly? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
