Independentalternatives keep the work under one roof, which removes them. Ask how many separate teamstouch your account and who is accountable when work crosses between them, because that seam iswhere quality drifts. ## The short version - **Networks coordinate. Independents execute.** The difference is handoffs. - **Ask how many teams touch your account** and who owns the seams. - **Cross-office work means timezone gaps** and diluted accountability. - **Independents trade breadth for coherence.**- **Ask who is accountable when two teams disagree.**## What a network structure actually means I run Flapen with 50 operators managing about 70 brands, 100% in-house with nosubcontracting, so my bias is clear. The structural point is worth understanding regardless. A network agency assembles capability from separate teams, often in separate offices orseparate companies under one brand. Your account might have strategy in one place, mediabuying in another, and creative in a third. | | Network | Independent |
| --- | --- | --- | | Capability breadth | High | Depends on the firm | | Handoffs per project | Several | Few or none | | Accountability | Distributed | Concentrated | | Timezone alignment | Often split | Usually single | | Escalation path | Through account management | Direct | | Cost structure | Coordination overhead included | Lower overhead | The row that decides most outcomes is handoffs. Every seam between teams is a place wherecontext is lost, timelines slip, and nobody is quite responsible. ## The questions that expose the seams 1. **How many separate teams will touch my account?**2. **Are they in the same company and the same timezone?**3. **Who is accountable when two teams disagree?**4. **Who do I call when something is wrong at 9am my time?**5. **Does creative production sit with the same team as strategy?** Question three is the important one. In a network, the honest answer is often an accountdirector whose job is coordination rather than execution, which means your escalation goes tosomeone who then has to escalate again. Question five matters more than it sounds. If the person deciding what the listing should sayis in a different organization from the person shooting the images, the images willapproximate the brief rather than express it. ## What independents give up Being honest about the trade.**Breadth.** A network can supply an unusual specialism quickly. An independent either has itor does not.**Surge capacity.** A large simultaneous launch across several markets is easier to staffinside a network.**Procurement comfort.** Network brands are easier to justify internally, which has real valueif you answer to a board. If none of those apply to your situation, you are paying coordination overhead for capabilityyou will not use. ## What to check instead of structure Two numbers cut across the whole comparison.**Caseload.** How many brands does the person running your account carry. Ours is about 1.4.This predicts your experience regardless of whether the agency is a network or independent.**Handoff count.** How many teams touch a typical deliverable. Fewer is better, and the answeris usually available immediately if the agency is candid. An independent with high caseload is worse than a network with low caseload. Structure is atendency, not a guarantee, so ask the numbers rather than assuming from the shape. ## What most agencies will not tell you Networks rarely explain how work actually flows, because the honest description involves morehandoffs than any client wants to hear about. Independents rarely mention that they willsubcontract the thing they cannot do, and that a subcontractor is a handoff wearing adifferent name. Ask both the same question: who physically does this work and where do they sit. Anindependent that subcontracts creative has the same seam a network does, just lesstransparently. The other quiet point: coordination overhead is real and it is priced into a network fee. Youare paying for the account director whose function is managing the seams. That is a legitimateservice when there are many seams to manage, and a poor purchase when the work could have beendone by one team without them. ## Related answers - [Alternatives to big-box Amazon agencies](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-big-box-amazon-agencies) - [Alternatives to top-tier Amazon agencies](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-top-tier-amazon-agencies) - [Alternatives to hiring a big Amazon consultancy](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-hiring-a-big-amazon-consultancy) - [Full-service Amazon agency recommendations](https://flapen.com/blog/full-service-amazon-agency-recommendations) - [Hiring an Amazon agency: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/hiring-an-agency) Ask how many teams touch your account.
