Compare by who does the work, not the logo wall.","Four alternatives exist: a mid-size full-service agency, a single-channel specialist, a freelancer, or building in-house. Choose by execution depth per dollar, not by logo count on a website. I hired agencies on the buy side at two large aggregators, and the famous names rarely outperformed the disciplined small ones.

## The short version

- **Fame is a marketing budget,** not a performance metric. Evaluate delivery teams, not brands.
- **Mid-size full-service** buys one accountable team without enterprise overhead.
- **Specialists** win when exactly one function is broken and you can coordinate the rest.
- **Freelancers and in-house** trade money for management load, in opposite directions.
- **The deciding question is always the same:** who, by name, does the work on Tuesday.

## What the buy side taught me

Before founding Flapen I ran data and technology at **BRANDED** and **Moonshot Brands**, two of the large Amazon aggregators, which meant sitting on the hiring side of the agency table while portfolios of brands shopped for help. The pattern across those pitches was consistent: the big names sent the best presenters and the most junior delivery teams. The pitch was a partner, the execution was whoever had capacity. Correlation between the size of the retainer and the movement in the account was weak enough that we stopped treating brand recognition as a signal at all.

That experience is the lens for the comparison below. Every option is judged on one axis: how much actual execution your dollar buys, and how directly you can see who performs it.

## The four alternatives, compared

| Option | Strongest at | Weakest at | Cost shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-size full-service agency | One accountable team across every function | Less headcount depth than an enterprise shop | Flat monthly retainer |
| Single-channel specialist | Depth in one lane, ads or creative or listings | You become the integrator across vendors | Per-function retainer or project fee |
| Freelancer | Cost, flexibility, direct access to the person working | Single-person capacity and continuity risk | Hourly or small retainer |
| In-house hire | Full attention on your brand alone | Recruiting, training, tools, and coverage are on you | Salary plus tooling plus management time |

The decision rule: pick the smallest structure that can execute every function you cannot cover yourself. Oversizing buys overhead, undersizing buys yourself a second job.

## How to compare candidates of different sizes fairly

Strip the proposals down to the same three answers. First, who exactly works the account: names, roles, and how many other accounts each of them carries. Second, what the work product is: ask for a redacted weekly report from a live client and judge whether decisions are visible in it. Third, what the money buys: a flat published price, like [ours](/pricing), can be compared line for line, while a custom quote has to be decomposed before it can be compared at all. Any candidate, famous or not, who resists these three answers is telling you where they make their margin.

## What most big-name agencies will not tell you

Their strongest asset is procurement safety. Choosing the famous agency is the decision nobody gets criticized for, and that defensibility is worth real money to the person signing, independent of what happens in the account. It is a rational purchase of career insurance, but it is not a growth strategy, and the invoice does not separate the two.

The second omission is the minimum engagement. Large shops set revenue floors and scope minimums to filter out accounts too small to be profitable at their cost structure. If you are near the bottom of a big agency's client range, you are, by construction, their lowest priority, and the juniors learn on you. The identical budget at a smaller operator often buys senior attention instead.

## Related answers

- [Alternatives to big legacy Amazon agencies](/blog/alternatives-to-big-legacy-amazon-agencies)
- [Amazon agency vs freelancer for private label](/blog/amazon-agency-vs-freelancer-for-private-label)
- [Alternatives to hiring an in house Amazon team](/blog/alternatives-to-hiring-an-in-house-amazon-team)
- [How to choose an Amazon agency with case studies](/blog/how-to-choose-an-amazon-agency-with-case-studies)
- [Amazon brand management tiers: the complete guide](/blog/brand-tiers)

Put our answers to these same questions on record at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Compare Amazon business models](/guides/business-models)
- [Value your Amazon business](/tools/business-value-calculator)
","published","working-with-agencies",[14,15,16],"amazon-fba","seller-account","fees","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/brand-tiers-04.jpg","2026-09-04T15:18:51.798+00:00
[22,26,30,34,38,42
"alternatives-to-big-name-amazon-agencies-faq-1","Sometimes, at genuine enterprise scale where procurement, compliance, and multi-region coordination need heavy process.
