Judge each on brands per account manager, not on the logo wall.","EU sellers priced out of big-box agencies have three real alternatives: a boutique agency where each manager carries a handful of brands, a senior freelancer per marketplace, or a part-time in-house hire. Compare them on one number, brands per account manager, because that ratio predicts service quality better than any client logo wall.

## The short version

- **Three alternatives exist: boutique agency, senior freelancer, in-house hire.** Each wins in a specific situation, and none of them requires a six-figure retainer.
- **The deciding metric is brands per account manager.** Ask every candidate for theirs in writing. At Flapen ours works out to about 1.4.
- **Europe is several markets pretending to be one.** Germany, France, Italy, and Spain convert differently, price differently, and search differently.
- **Word-for-word translation is the most expensive shortcut in EU selling.** Copy that converts in English routinely dies in German.
- **Whoever you choose, keep ownership.** Grant user permissions on your own Seller Central account and keep them revocable.

## The failure modes that push EU sellers out of big agencies

The pattern I see when a European seller lands on our audit queue after leaving a large agency is consistent enough to rank. These are the five failures, ordered by what they cost.

| Rank | Failure mode | What it typically costs you | Which alternative fixes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Account manager overload | Weeks of drift between decisions | Boutique agency with a low account load |
| 2 | Translation passed off as localization | Conversion collapse in DE and FR | Native-language specialist per market |
| 3 | One ad structure cloned across five marketplaces | Wasted spend in every secondary market | Any partner who builds campaigns per market |
| 4 | Blended reporting across the EU | A failing marketplace hidden for months | In-house analyst or per-market dashboards |
| 5 | Junior staff churn | A restart every quarter | A named senior operator, contractually |

### Overload is the root failure

Most of the others follow from the first one. When one account manager carries fifteen or twenty brands, your account gets minutes per week, and minutes per week means templates: templated campaigns, templated copy, machine translation. The manager is not lazy. The math of their week does not permit judgment.

This is why the account-load question outranks every other item on a due diligence list. Flapen runs about 70 brands with a team of 50 operators, and I hold that ratio deliberately, because every service failure I have ever diagnosed in a competitor's former client traces back to an operator who had no time to think.

### Localization is where the EU punishes shortcuts

A German buyer reads a stiff, obviously translated bullet list and quietly concludes the brand is not serious about Germany. You never see this in a report. You see a conversion rate two points lower than the UK and no explanation. The fix is not a better translation vendor, it is keyword research done natively in each language, which is why we produce content in English, German, Spanish, and French rather than translating outward from English.

### Cloned campaigns burn the secondary markets

Search behavior, competition density, and pricing differ across the five major EU marketplaces. A campaign structure exported from amazon.co.uk into amazon.it with translated keywords will spend money, and that is all it will reliably do. Before you pay anyone to fix this, size each marketplace on its own merits. The method we use for that is public at [our market research process](/research).

## How to run the replacement decision

1. Write down which failure mode above is actually hurting you. Switching providers to escape overload and then hiring an overloaded freelancer changes nothing.
2. Shortlist two candidates per alternative and ask each for their account load, their native-language coverage, and one example of per-market strategy divergence.
3. Trial the winner on your weakest marketplace, not your strongest, with a 90-day review date agreed upfront.

## What most agencies will not tell you

The economics of a big-box agency require the overload. The senior people you meet during the sales process are funded by the margin on junior generalists running your account afterwards, and the account load per junior is the whole business model. No salesperson will volunteer that number, which is exactly why you should ask for it and get it in writing.

The second silence: many large agencies quietly subcontract EU content and translation work to whoever is cheapest that quarter. Ask who physically produces your German copy, and where that person sits.

## Related answers

- [Alternatives to London or US Amazon agencies for Dubai sellers](/blog/alternatives-to-london-or-us-amazon-agencies-for-dubai-sellers)
- [Best audit for Amazon listings across EU marketplaces](/blog/best-audit-for-amazon-listings-across-eu-marketplaces)
- [KPIs to track for multi-market Amazon sellers](/blog/kpis-to-track-for-multi-market-amazon-sellers)
- [Top Amazon account management agencies EU marketplaces](/blog/top-amazon-account-management-agencies-eu-marketplaces)
- [Amazon marketplaces by geography: the complete guide](/blog/geography-and-marketplaces)

If the boutique column above describes what you want, the full service list and flat pricing are published at [Flapen](/amazon-consulting).

## Keep learning

- [Expand to new channels](/guides/channel-expansion)
- [Find Amazon warehouse locations](/tools/warehouse-locations)
","published","channel-expansion",[14,15,16,17],"amz-expansion","amazon-fba","ppc","listing-setup","joel-turcotte-gaucher","/images/blog/clusters/geography-and-marketplaces-04.jpg","2026-09-04T14:28:51.798+00:00
[23,27,31,35,39
"alternatives-to-big-box-amazon-agencies-for-eu-sellers-faq-1","For one or two marketplaces, often yes, if they are senior and natively fluent.
