If it is data plumbing, order sync and inventory feeds, evaluate other multichannel software. If it is decisions, pricing, advertising, and listing work across marketplaces, software will not close the gap. Score both categories against the six criteria below before paying for either. ## The short version - **Name the job first.** Linnworks is order and inventory management software. If your pain is elsewhere, a different tool in the same category changes nothing. - **Software moves data. It does not make decisions.** Ad budgets, price positions, and listing changes still need an operator. - **Score every candidate on six weighted criteria.** Coverage, reliability, decision support, accountability, exit cost, and total price. - **Weight accountability highest for growth problems.** No dashboard has ever been responsible for a result. - **Ask decision questions in the demo.** A vendor who cannot answer them is selling you plumbing, which is fine, as long as plumbing is what you need. ## Start by naming the actual job You are probably reading this because a tool is in place and the account still is not growing. Before comparing platforms, split marketplace operations into its two layers. The first layer is mechanical: orders flow, stock levels sync, shipments reconcile. Software categories like multichannel management handle this, and choosing between vendors is a features-and-price exercise. The second layer is judgment: which products get ad budget, what price wins in each marketplace, which listing gets rewritten this month, when a product should be cut. No platform performs that layer. If your frustration lives there, the alternative you are looking for is a managed service or a hire, not another subscription. At Flapen we run both layers for about 70 brands, with an in-house tech team building our own tooling, so I have a clear view of where software ends and operating begins. ## The six-criteria scorecard Score each candidate from 1 to 5 on every row, multiply by the weight, and total it. Run the same card for software and for managed services so the comparison is honest. | Criterion | Weight | What a 5 looks like |
| --- | --- | --- | | Marketplace coverage | 15% | Every marketplace you sell in today plus the next two you plan | | Sync reliability | 20% | Documented uptime, short sync intervals, alerts on failure | | Decision support | 20% | Someone or something acts on the data, not just displays it | | Accountability | 25% | A named owner answers for outcomes on a schedule | | Exit cost | 10% | Your data, mappings, and history leave with you | | Total price | 10% | Full cost including setup, integrations, and your own admin time | Two notes on using it. First, weight accountability at zero if you only need plumbing, and the exercise becomes a normal software bake-off. Second, include your own hours in total price. A cheap platform that consumes ten hours a week of your attention is not cheap. ## The demo questions that separate tools from operators 1. What ACoS should this account target right now, and why? 2. Which of my marketplaces is underpriced, and by how much? 3. Which product should I stop restocking? 4. Who calls me when performance drops, and how fast? A software vendor cannot answer these, and should not pretend to. A managed service must. On the first question, the only right answer is that the target depends on product stage: we run advertising aggressively at launch and tighten to efficiency targets at maturity, and any provider quoting one universal number has not thought about it. Whatever you evaluate, ask for the launch figure and the maturity figure separately. Where research feeds the decision layer, ask what the provider actually analyzes. Our own [research](https://flapen.com/research) practice sits underneath every marketplace decision we make, which is what makes the operating layer work. ## What platform vendors will not tell you A migration between multichannel platforms typically costs more in re-mapping, testing, and broken edge cases than the annual price difference between the two contracts. If your current tool works mechanically, switching platforms to fix a growth problem is the most expensive way to change nothing. The growth problem lives in the decision layer, and the honest move is to fix that layer directly, either with a capable hire or a managed service with named accountability. I have watched sellers churn through three sync platforms in two years while their advertising ran unmanaged the entire time. ## Related answers - [Alternatives to Feedonomics for Amazon marketplace feeds](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-feedonomics-for-amazon-marketplace-feeds) - [Alternatives to ChannelAdvisor for marketplace ops](https://flapen.com/blog/alternatives-to-channeladvisor-for-marketplace-ops) - [How to sync inventory across Amazon US EU JP](https://flapen.com/blog/how-to-sync-inventory-across-amazon-us-eu-jp) - [Integrate Shopify with multiple Amazon marketplaces](https://flapen.com/blog/integrate-shopify-with-multiple-amazon-marketplaces) - [Amazon marketplaces by geography: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/geography-and-marketplaces) If the decision layer is the gap in your stack, see what a managed alternative includes at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Expand to new channels](https://flapen.com/guides/channel-expansion) - [Find Amazon warehouse locations](https://flapen.com/tools/warehouse-locations) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Do I still need multichannel software if I hire an agency? What is the cheapest credible setup for a small multi-marketplace seller? How do I compare a software subscription with a managed service price? When is switching platforms actually justified? What should an operator report weekly on marketplace ops? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
