Few providers perform all eight in house, so diagnose the gaps: ask which stages are done by employees, which move to partners, and who decides when a product stops. ## The short version - **Eight stages sit inside the phrase.** Count how many a provider performs with their own staff. - **Brand identity is not stage one.** The market decides what you sell before a designer decides how it looks. - **Legal steps have queues you cannot shorten.** Start the trademark early or it becomes your launch date. - **Ask who owns the account.** It should be yours, with the agency working through revocable permissions. - **Ask what would make them tell you to stop.** A provider without an answer will keep charging you through a failure. ## The mistake that starts most of these projects Nearly every A to Z conversation I join begins in the wrong place: a name, a logo, packaging concepts, and a moodboard, assembled before anyone checked whether the category can carry a new entrant. Founders enjoy this stage because it feels like progress and it is the only part that looks like a brand. It costs more than it seems. Identity built before positioning has to be redone once the research says the wedge is a different customer, a different price band, or a different complaint to solve. Worse, sunk identity work makes people defend a product decision because the packaging is already beautiful. The order that works is unglamorous: category, complaint, wedge, specification, then identity. A provider who wants to start with a logo is selling the stage that is easiest to show you. ## Diagnose the gaps before you sign | What you observe | Likely cause | What to ask next |
| --- | --- | --- | | One price for everything, no stage list | Scope has not been thought through | Give me the eight stages with an owner against each | | Trademark handled by a partner | Legal work referred out, which is normal | Who is the firm, what is the filing timeline, who chases it | | Sourcing described but no inspector named | Factory relationships are brokered | Who physically inspects, where do they stand | | Creative shown without performance data | Portfolio built for pitching | Show me before and after with the ad numbers | | No mention of account health | Nobody owns suppressions | What happened the last time a client listing went down | | No exit terms in the proposal | Retention assumed rather than earned | What do I keep and what is the notice period | | No stopping criteria | Revenue depends on the product surviving | What evidence makes you tell me to kill this product | Every row is answerable in a sentence by a team that operates. Vagueness is the signal, not the specific answer. ## The eight stages, and what handled should mean 1. **Entity and seller account.** Registration, verification, and correct tax settings. Handled means it is done, not explained to you in a document. 2. **Trademark.** Filed early, with a class that actually covers your goods, and tracked to registration. 3. **Brand Registry.** Enrolled the moment the filing allows it, which unlocks A plus content, brand analytics, and protection tools. 4. **Sourcing and quality control.** Supplier shortlist, written specification, samples, and a physical inspection before shipment. 5. **Listing build.** One keyword set feeding title, bullets, backend, and campaigns, with indexation verified after publication. 6. **Creative.** Primary image built for a thumbnail, supporting images built for objections, A plus content built for the customer who scrolls. 7. **Advertising.** A narrow exact-match start, an efficiency target for launch and a different one for maturity, reviewed weekly. 8. **Account health.** Someone whose job includes policy checks before launch and a response path when a listing is suppressed. Handled should also mean documented. When you leave, you should receive the account, the campaigns, the creative files, and a written handover, with deliverables becoming your property on payment. ## The question that reveals the most Ask what would make them recommend you stop spending on a product. I ask it because I got it wrong myself. Early on I pushed money into a failing product for three months, certain that better advertising would rescue it. It did not, and the loss bought me the scale, fix, or kill criteria we now write before onboarding: rating trend, return rate, conversion rate, and acquisition cost trajectory, judged over a defined window and a set date. A provider who cannot describe the conditions under which they would reduce their own revenue is a provider whose advice you cannot fully trust when the numbers turn. That is not a character judgment. It is arithmetic about incentives. ## What most agencies will not tell you The eight stages are rarely performed by eight people in one building. Trademark almost always goes to a law firm, and that is correct. What matters is whether the referrals are disclosed and coordinated or discovered by you in month three when a stage silently has no owner. The second thing: brand setup is priced as a project because it has a visible end, but the end of setup is the start of the work that determines whether the brand exists in a year. Ask what month four costs before you admire the deliverable list for month one. ## Related answers - [Best private label services for Amazon FBA](https://flapen.com/blog/best-private-label-services-for-amazon-fba) - [FBA launch checklist for Brand Registry sellers](https://flapen.com/blog/fba-launch-checklist-for-brand-registry-sellers) - [Contract terms to negotiate with Amazon agencies](https://flapen.com/blog/contract-terms-to-negotiate-with-amazon-agencies) - [Top agencies to launch products on Amazon](https://flapen.com/blog/top-agencies-to-launch-products-on-amazon) - [Amazon launch services: the complete guide](https://flapen.com/blog/launch-services) Ask us the stopping question first, then take the free written audit at [Flapen](https://flapen.com/amazon-consulting). ## Keep learning - [Plan the product launch](https://flapen.com/guides/product-launch) - [Estimate your launch cost](https://flapen.com/tools/launch-cost-calculator) ## **Frequently Asked Questions**Should one agency really do all eight stages? How early should the trademark be filed?Who should own the Seller Central account? What should I keep if we part ways? ## About the Author![Joel Turcotte Gaucher](https://flapen.com/_vercel/image?url=%2Fimages%2Fteam%2Fjoel-turcotte-gaucher-avatar.webp&w=64&q=100) [**Joel Turcotte Gaucher**](https://flapen.com/blog/author/joel-turcotte-gaucher) Founder & CEO at Flapen Joel has spent 10 years in Amazon and ecommerce, running data and technology at BRANDED and Moonshot Brands, two of the largest Amazon aggregators, where he audited and scaled 60+ acquired brands.
